Finally sorted it! Turns out that the issue was that the Windows Updater was not turning itself off properly from the GUI. I had to stop WU in Services and I found this article very helpful:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...will-not-update-ive-tried-multiple-fixes.html
Windows don't make it easy for anyone. I had a similar issue in October on my Win 7 system but put that down to my not automatically installing all the recommended updates. However this computer has always been set to automatically install updates and I can't understand why it stopped updating in May.

Anyway it's now installing 21 important updates and I will leave the setting on "Check for updates but let me choose........." so that I make sure I have a Team Viewer session each month and install the same updates as I do on my machine.

On that issue with BT ( and it may be totally unrelated ) -
A friend in UK asked for my help recently with a DNS problem on BT .
She has used OpenDNS for some time now but has recently noticed some odd things happening ....
Connections being dropped and bandwidth throttling , and it started me wondering if it might be some intentional monkey business .....

This is a very real and prevalent problem. I had to call my ISP Tech Support today (Cox) for a different issue (periodically losing my wireless net connection on Windows 10 and Android devices). While waiting in the queue for a Tech Support Rep, a recording is played: "If you are using Win 10 and are unable to connect to the internet restart your PC." This is Microsoft's first step in trouble-shooting a connection problem:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10741/windows-10-fix-network-connection-issues

I asked the Tech about the Win 10 Update issue and he said they have been receiving many calls from customers using Win 10 who have been unable to connect to the net since the Update.

All it needs for to 'fix' it is to do a restart... not a shutdown. That seems to give the machine time to pick up the connection.

At least that's what has fixed most of the PC's I've dealt with.

On one machine (an old HP netbook), that didn't work.
Tried uninstalling the KB3201845. Didn't work either.
Did a Macrium Reflect image restore which failed half-way with a read error - seems the backup drive is failing (chkdsk /r can't fix it).
And now that machine appears to be completely borked. Can't get to MR boot menu, or even boot from a DVD with startup sequence correctly adjusted in BIOS.
    A comedy of errors :(

Hard disks are always broken at the wrong time ...
Maybe do a double-backup strategy next time :cautious: - Put your Macrium-image on two backup drives, just in case.

I just ran WU and i see that i have 2 preview patch's that i should not install right. I should just leave 869 and 686 there or hide them, and they will go away by them selves i think. Are the Dec Patch's due to arrive today..

    Yes, just ignore the previews.
They will be succeeded by the December rollups.

    Yes, in a few hours.
1 hour and 38 minutes from now.

Yes I do that normally. Just not for that old netbook.
But it looks like a clean Win10 install from USB has been successful ...

About the December updates on Win 7 (Pro, 64-bits):

Installed the December 2016 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 KB3205394 (thanks Mister X for the link).
Installed December 2016 Office 2010 updates via WU.

But it are the December 2016 .NET Framework update(s) that are puzzling me. Which way to go and which ones?
Ron posted here an article from Woody Leonhard. Maybe it is good to post here in this thread the link to the related discussion at AskWoody in which the .NET Framework question(s) are discussed (among other things):

If you're installing security only updates than you will have to install all of them since they are not cumulative. If you're installing security and quality rollup then installing latest would install all previous.

I had problems with installing the December 2016 .NET Framework update(s) on Win 7 64-bit, and put back backup-images (thanks as always to Macrium Reflect) several times.
No problems with December 2016 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 KB3205394 and the December 2016 Office 2010 updates via WU.

I have made a list of posts and comments and sites about the December 2016 updates (maybe someone find it useful):

    EDIT to add:
The following article from Woody has mysteriously disappeared from the infoworld site

And currently the latest news by Woody Leonhard (21 Dec 2016) :
Microsoft yanks .Net security patches over conflict with SQL Server, Veritas Backup
After official warnings from Microsoft and Veritas, .Net Security/Quality rollups KB 3210137 and KB 3210138 are pulled

    Newer EDIT to add
Woody explained why he pulled the infoworld article.

    Hi Mantra,

A little difficult to give advice; maybe wait until others have posted their experience.
