    Re: Norton 2011 released

SEP needs urgent integration of Insight protection because it is nothing so special when it comes to detection (unlikely Norton). While I find it easy to install , manage and deploy , it lacks good proactive protection against unknown threats. I think the reason is Symantec is very scared of FPs especially in corporate networks/big clients.

ITA. SEP is purposely conservative - their targeted users can't afford any panics or spend any time here at Wilders:D . Home users need NIS more, well... "proactive" is the best word I think.

It displays a custom html in the browser, similarly to Eset, Norton or some others...

Also, is Download insight now browser independent or?

I don't think this link has something to do with your problem earlier in this thread. The bug is related to Insight not always showing information for GOOD files . Nobody has posted that it doesn't always show information for BAD files . I also haven't noticed that and have pushed hundreds of mal files against Norton.

There are other bugs , most related to the Cloud - some are described in Norton Community , some are not...

I have internal confirmation of the bug.

It affects slower connections, that are being loaded - so if you have slow internet, and are heavily downloading something while launching a sample, download insight information in certain circumstances is not retrieved properly. I am told this will be fixed very shortly.

Seems like there is some kind of issue with handles not being released properbly with NIS 2011, too. 3000+ and rising a few hours after boot. Confirmed by other users on the Norton forum.

How is this determined and what problem does it create? One thing I notice about NIS 2011 on one of my computers is every so often it causes intense disk activity. This happens while I'll working so it's not associated with idle-time scanning. I hope this is fixed soon.

Just open the task manager and make it sure it shows handles.

    Handle leak:

My KIS (avp.exe) has currently about 2100 handles. And I'd expect Norton to have less when operating normally.

Yeah, and the main problem is that it increases. 2000 at boot increases by 1000 after a few hours of doing nothing special. Handles should be released properly, and it doesn't look like NIS is doing that.

I encountered the same bug but I neither download anything (e.g. use torrent client) nor my connection is slow.

    Re: Norton 2011 released

btw even if it gets 5000 , what are the problems someone can experience ?
    How's that an issue ?

Mine is at 2700 after 48hrs+ after last reboot.
I've noticed that one of the svchost.exe are at 2100 , wmplayer when running (mp3) is using about 1800 ..

But then again, I don't know much about handles , so ... if everything is running smooth and without problems AFAIC it can use 10k handles, don't really care.

    Re: Norton 2011 released

This handle thing is humbug, ccSvcHst (the system service instance) stays around 3000 handles, and with all the hooks it has to keep, it's no wonder. It adds a hundred, but then releases a hundred, therefore it's not really a leak 'cause the number would keep climbing if it was, wouldn't it?

+ has anyone seen any sypmtoms of performance trouble because of this? :D C'mon!

At this amount, nope, not really.
I'd be more concerned about the bug with insight.

Same here 3200 handles. Its not leaking, just has a lot of functionality hence a lot of kernel objects. Process Explorer will show you the details of the handles.
