    Re: Norton 2011 released

This version is already being deployed on New computers and shipped, so it definitely is the RTM version, even if Norton seems to want to deny that.

Also keep in mind that there is a 78 meg update that downloads when you install it for the first time. It does change some core files and def's just not the version number of the product.

You may be interested to know that I resumed the online chat support with Symantec and they were able to finally resolve the problem. It took a long time and it's not clear exactly what was causing the problem. Before I contacted them I had successfully installed the program in SAFE mode, however I was getting Live Update errors. Among other things they used the Norton Removal Tool again. Anyone it's finally working properly. My thanks to you and others in this thread who responded to my original post.

It's not bad overall but the complaint I have is the same as last year. I ran a full scan and it wanted to delete 27 files. Some false positives, others not but zipped and harmless. In any case it deleted then without giving me any other option. I'm sure I'll be dumping this as soon as I decide what I want to replace it with.

Had the same issue , but they are all in quarantine , and from there you can find option Restore & Exclude.
Was thinking to drop it too cause of that, as I don't like that, but can't find anything better and beside that, I like it really, never had better piece of security software. Even firewall I found to be pretty good :thumb:

Same here, I tested a couple of scenarios and was able to restore the file. No complaints yet. :thumb:

Just to point this out, you could send those files to them so they could put a exclusion out for them. This would solve the problem overall and make it a better product. Would be more productive then making a useless post that no one can "Fix" for you. :cautious:

This could be said for all AV Software not just Norton, instead of Crying about FP's or mismatched files send them in and explain what they are. So they can fix them and don't affect anyone else with the same file.

So much for my hypothesis that it was a messed up config.

Clean install of Windows 7 32 bit, clean install of NIS 2011. Download NOT blocked, file reputation "good" (!!), when running through sandboxie, creates a spawn of other processes - NIS does not terminate keygen.exe...

Can someone post their NIS settings, and how they are different from default? Can anyone retest the file? (PM me for link).

The screenshot shows all the subsequent threats that NIS does detect:

It may probably be irrelevant, but - smart definitions or full definitions? i had full defs on at the moment. I would retest the file, but only if it triggers a UAC prompt before infecting - I don't have a dedicated 'test' system and rebuilding free time. I already ran the gauntlet once, unwisely.

Full definitions. For completeness, an exact log of settings different from default on this system:

Microsoft Office Automatic Scan - ON.
    Heuristic Protection - Aggressive
    Low Risks - Remove
    Tracking Scan Cookies - Ignore
Enable Boot Time Protection - Aggressive
    Sonar Advanced Mode - Aggressive
Sonar Remove Risks Automatically - On
Sonar Remove Risks if I am away - On
    Anti-Spam - Off
Network Security Map Welcome Screen - Off
    Identity safe - Off
    Special Offer Notification - Off

EDIT: Retested using default settings, no difference.

What about UAC, is it on or off on your system?
SONAR, Boot time, Heuristics on defaults here. The file itself is still undetected by scanning signatures, btw.

UAC is off, either way this should not affect Sonar detection. Tested it with on, I get no UAC prompt. Were your files in a rar called Spyware Doctor 5.0.0.179?

    Re: Norton 2011 released

Does Sonar not popup at all or isn't able to terminate the malware? Don't run the file in the sandbox, since it partially affects Sonar/any BB results. (Sonar detections are also based on activities in folders/registry on the real system).

As for "Good" reputation for malware... yes I got them on some undetected TDL droppers, but it's not too much of an issue IMO.

Yes. Same file version, same rar, UAC on, no UAC prompt but it gets killed by SONAR. No subsequent detections.

    Re: Norton 2011 released

I've ran it on a live system too, no sandbox or VM. Sonar does not detect keygen.exe (no pop-ups), only some subsequently loaded exe's that can be seen in the screenshot further up this page. I can't think of a conceivable way that Sonar can detect on one system, and not on another... Any clues or ideas?

    MD5 of my installer: 11F8024682D58768595008E914DE71E6

Maybe there are sonar limitations on some operating systems (XP vs Vista vs 7) What is your OS and what is the OS 3GUSER/TomiRed used?

It's all in the previous posts. Win 7 32 bit, others have run the same OS and got different results.

MD5 of mine, according to virustotal: ff08b3b2c0ef6c7119a9311873db6777
I'm running it through ThreatExpert and Anubis, the results will be coming shortly.

    1. anubis report
    2. ThreatExpert. Wonder why there's no behavior analysis.
