    Malicious Script Protection -- A Wilders forum post recently suggested that SecureAPlus (SAP) is weak in the area of protecting its users from malicious scripts. That Wilders post was referenced and discussed in a topic entitled "SecureAPlus versus Scriptors" in a thread at SAP's forum. I suggest that it be read by all SAP users and potential users.

    PLEASE ==> I would very much appreciate any & all comments and recommendations about scripts protection. I doubt that I am totally alone in needing to learn more about this topic.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    New Issue......
    There is a lengthy but interesting discussion of SAP's free version over YONDER. However, bear in mind that SAP's free version has a certain weakness when compared to its paid versions. Namely, SAP's paid versions enable SAP's {safe/unsafe} decisions to be based on signature PLUS signature thumbprint. The free version of SAP makes such decisions based on signature only (NO thumbprint). For a bit more on this matter see Posts at HERE and elsewhere in this Wilders thread.
    For a discussion of WHY thumbprinting is an essential safeguard when checking the digital signing of apps, read "The Rise of Super-Stealthy Digitally Signed Malware" at HERE.
    PLEASE ===> Any and all comments are solicited on this issue.
    PS ==> I am BY NO MEANS a *security expert* in these matters so please correct me in the likelihood that I have made errors in this posting.
    Yeah the free version of SAP is no good. AVLab gave SAP their first bad review ever simply because the free version has been stripped of everything good.
    However. The paid versions of SAP are excellent. I'm a paid Pro user of SAP. and just recently I upgraded to the version of SAP with the avira addon.
    To that last point. Yes, switching that setting in the whitelisting settings to "Name and thumbprint in the trusted certificate list" option is mandatory. Signed malware seems to be the thing every bad actor is switching to. It's just a matter of pirating signing software and then slapping a signature on malware.
    I've been trying to get the devs of SAP to make the name and thumbprint option the only option for all verisons, but they just won't listen. So if you're going to use SAP. you MUST pay for it for it to work correctly.
    The lite version seems useless really.
    That's not entirely true. Against a lot of malware it's ...okay. However, as I said. The paid versions are way better. I also mentioned that AVLab's yearly rating of all of the free antivirus programs gave it a negative review for the first time ever this year.
    They did however recommend the paid versions.
    I have been using SAP Essentials for >3 months now & I'm quite satisfied with its performance. It has popped several alerts during that time, 1 of which was actually a nasty. As for the rest, SAP's alerts are very informative so it was easy to deal with each of them and still have warm feelings that I knew what I was doing.
    SAP is not my only real-time security app, but it is the only AV app I'm running. Since I image often & keep images ~3 months, I feel quite comfortable staying with Win7 for now.
    Does anyone know why ESET marks SecureAPlus as malware/ or potentially unwanted software?
    I suggest you upload SecureAPlus (SAP) to VirusTotal. Of nearly 100 antivirus apps, ESET is the ONLY one that reports SAP, NOT as malware, but as "A Variant Of Win32/SecureAge.B Potentially Unwanted." Obviously, it's a false positive on ESET's part.
    It's easy to find this sort of information -- why don't you do it yourself next time? Also, wouldn't it be better to post this sort of query in the ESET thread -- why ask SAP users about things that another AV is doing?
    Yeah, that's weird to me too. Especially since Eset used to be one of the databases that SecureAge was renting.
    As Bellgamin said. a grand total of ONE database on VT says it's a PUP. And we know it's legit software because SecureAge's "Apex" is one of the engines on VT right now.
    The tray-icon will sometimes freeze up and not show that it's in the position that it's currently in. The icon will show like it's in interactive mode even though it's been switched to silent mode.
    SecureAPlus is now at version 6.2.1
    Bugs fixed:
    - Typo: instalutil.exe. Changed "InstalUtil.exe" to "InstallUtil.exe"
    Modifications:
    - Give more space for the file name in Real-time scanning dialog
    - Update EULA
    What's new:
    - When untrusted file is running during boot-up, added into whitelist.log and Blocked.log:
    "### Untrusted file is running during boot-up, filename:"
    - Untrust the file that is detected by real-time scanning
    - Added command line rule:
    reg add
    reg import
    - Do not show “Shopping Cart” button for enterprise customers
    :eek::eek::eek: MEMORY INJECTION
    I just noted that SAP's Pro version offers protection against memory injection whereas the Essentials and Free versions do not.
    Memory injection involves malware injected into RAM. Malware solely in RAM cannot survive a restart. Correct?? IF so:
    Q1- Can ALL damage that might be done by an injection be avoided if a user simply reboots immediately after Pro version alerts that an injection has occurred?
    OR
    Q2- Would it be safer to (a) do a shut-down after Pro version alerts to a memory injection, and then (b) do a complete image restore?
    I recommend everyone to read THIS informative article on memory injection. I am very interested in any & all comments on this matter of SAP versus memory injection.
    Where it says "blocking evasive malware" that's the way to go. The two paid versions of S.A.P. have that covered already.
    For something to be injected, you need some other process to happen first. Like a command line or a script.
    As to Memory Injection, the makers of SAP very clearly indicate that ONLY the Pro version offers "Process Protector vs Memory Injection" -- the comparison of Free VS Essentials VS Pro versions is right HERE.
    Ergo, the Pro's user-expandable protection of specified processes from memory injection is something over & above "blocking evasive malware."
    As to "blocking evasive malware" -- how do SAP's paid versions accomplish this? May I assume that you are referring to SAP's whitelist/anti-exe capability? I.e., whatever process was trying to inject malware into RAM would be untrusted, hence that process would be default blocked -- is that what you are driving at?
    Yeah, because you need a command line or a script to properly inject something into something else. Something started by a parent process invoking a child process. If malware were to get loaded through a drive-by-download, SAP would kill it right away as long as the name and thumbprint option is being used and all of your daily-used applications' EXEs are added to he restricted apps list.
    Or alternatively you could run SAP along side another whitelisting application like voodooshield or comodo firewall.
    for malware to run under those circumstances it would need to be mistakenly whitelisted by two whitelisting applications instead of just one.
    @Mops21 -- Thanks for the update. I'm happily using the "Pro" version. It updated automatically but FIRST it asked me if I was ready. Thus I had time to make sure my other security apps didn't mess up the download or install. I wish all apps would give warnings before they do automatic updates. Some do. Some don't.
    It is all in the timing: Copy and paste of the install log into notepad before you are shut out. :)
    Good grief -- what a way to uselessly burn up bandwidth paid for by other folks. It's beyond me what value there is in copying an install log verbatim & then posting it in a forum.
    It would be nice to have the option to uninstall any offline AV that the user currently has. The avira addon and ClamAV use a lot of ram and right now the avira addon is on my plan.
    I have 2 offline (on-demand) AVs: Kaspersy Virus Removal Tool & Hitman Pro. Neither of those use any RAM whatsoever except when they are scanning. Also, I don't need SAP to uninstall them -- I can do that myself, if ever I want to.
    Obviously I missed your point altogether, Duke sire. :) Please clarify.
    P.S. -- it's been a while since you posted here. I have missed you.
    I was talking about the offline scanners that can be integrated into SAP. Just those.
