Thanks SM. I have also turned off CEIP via Group Policy following the ghacks article. I would be lost without all this helpful guidance! :)

    Hi mantra,
It is not free, but not very expensive.
Usually during the Christmas and NewYear time there is a period when you can get it with a discount from the site. It is then announced there. Of course I don't know whether that will happen again this year.
    Do you have a link?

    Well, back to topic.

Thanks all for your further replies!
I will have to look at the info provided by Stupendous Man.

I didn't have the time yet to look at things further or do anything, but I made a list of folders and files in my folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ an hour ago.
I hope it is not too confusing.

Note: for files : Date/Time = Last modified
    Format date is dd-mm-yyyy
    Here it is:

I have the same folders and files (other file date/time),
    except for
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\SoftLanding\
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\SoftLandingStage\
which are not on my Windows 7 x64 Professional and Home Preview systems.

I have all the same files as FanJ, including the two SoftLanding folders, although they are all empty since they were created two days ago. The only data is in the "event" files but this has also not changed since the files were created.

I think the reason for the difference between FanJ's and your system, and mine, may probably be that my systems had Diagnostics Tracking Service (DiagTrack) already (because of installation of KB3068708 and KB3080149, earlier), and that I had DiagTrack disabled long before I installed KB3197868, last Tuesday.

You are probably right. I always thought that I already had DiagTrack disabled but must have been wrong as I have just disabled it today. I can confirm that both KB3068708 and KB3080149 are still in my Optional Update folder.

On a separate note, did I read somewhere that WU will eventually include all these older optional updates in their monthly rollups starting around February so as to get everyone's OS the same?

That information was in the August 15 article Further simplifying servicing models for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1,
and in the August 30 article A Bit About the Windows Servicing Model,
However, we don't know what that means, exactly.
Will Microsoft push each and every earlier so called 'recommended' update, or will only the 'truly' recommendable updates be pushed?
    We don't know, yet.

Thanks for that. It is certainly vague from MS - I guess we will just have to wait and see. I suspect though that they will want to eventually include everything, otherwise systems will not all be the same.

That might be a reason. I've removed all telemetry related updates in my VM and Diagnosis folder with some subfolders is still there. OTOH service is not present any more.
On my host system, where telemetry updates were never installed, I don't have Diagnosis folder.

OK, I made a temporarily backup-image (just in case), and restored a backup-image from 8 Nov 2016 which was made before I installed the security updates for Office 2010 (home and students) and the November 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup 3197868

    There is no folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis
Not such a folder at all.

    What to do now:

    1.
Check if I have (quotes from Stupendous Man):
    2.
Check if I have Diagnostics Tracking Service (DiagTrack).
Hm, I'll have to read info from Stupendous Man how to check this.

    3.
    Check (quotes from Stupendous Man):
    4.
    Install the Nov Office updates.
    Check if that changed things.

    5.
Install the Nov Security Only updates.
    Check if that changed things.

Perhaps it could be related to a February 9 Patch Tuesday update that had telemetry content.
However, I do not know if any of the February 9 Patch Tuesday updates had telemetry content.

Could you have a look at your Windows Update history, to see if on February 9, 10 or 11 you installed one or more of the following February 2016 updates:

KB2976978, "Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 8.1 and Windows 8" (N.B. recent revision is not the same)
KB3035583, "Update installs Get Windows 10 app in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1"
KB3123862, "Updated capabilities to upgrade Windows 8.1 and Windows 7"
KB3135449, "Windows Update Client for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2: February 2016"

I do not know if any of those had telemetry content, but I can't rule it out.

Regarding KB3135449, I do not know if it had content of the previous KB3112336, "Windows Update Client for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2: December 2015", of which the knowledge base article mentioned "This update enables support for additional upgrade scenarios from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, and provides a smoother experience when you have to retry an operating system upgrade because of certain failure conditions. This update also improves the ability of Microsoft to monitor the quality of the upgrade experience."

On my Dutch language Windows 7 systems it is not translated, it is still "Diagnostics Tracking Service (DiagTrack)".
However, on Windows 10, Microsoft renamed it to "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry (DiagTrack)". I don't know if the same may apply to Windows 8.1.
If there is no Diagnostics Tracking Service, and no Connected User Experiences and Telemetry, the DiagTrack service simply is not there.

Thank you, Stupendous Man, for that! I too use the Dutch version of Win 7. I had been wondering about it. And more: sometimes it ain't so easy to follow guidelines written for the English version when you use a different language. For example at that page at ghacks Martin writes to type Task Scheduler in the runbox, but that doesn't work. If he had written type taskschd.msc then that works.

Now about Diagnostics Tracking Service (DiagTrack) :
I don't see it. What I do see, are the following; but I guess that I should leave them as they are:
    2.a
    Diagnostic Policy Service
    C:\windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNoNetwork
    2.b
    Diagnostic Service Host
    C:\windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalService
    2.c
    Diagnostic System Host
    C:\windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted

You asked me previously whether I have KB3068708 and KB3080149 installed. I don't have them as far as I was able to see.

Some more about "Turn off the Windows Customer Experience program" at http://www.ghacks.net/2016/10/26/turn-off-the-windows-customer-experience-program/

Martin first starts there with the Group Policy Editor. Although I have the Pro version of Win 7 64-bit, I had troubles with it. But I have to admit (feeling ashamed to say it), I have zero experience with it.
So I went to his registry guidelines.
As I didn't have it, I made the reg-key per his instructions:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows]
    "CEIPEnable"=dword:00000000

But I saw this comment there on his guidelines:
I noticed that I too had already HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows
    A bit confusing. Is it:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows
    or
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows
    I don't know.

And some more about "Turn off the Windows Customer Experience program" at http://www.ghacks.net/2016/10/26/turn-off-the-windows-customer-experience-program/
(I am not finished yet; sorry about the posts; I don't know whether folks are interested in them).
    Now Task Scheduler.
(again there are language differences between Martin's English version guidelines and non-English versions of Windows).

    I disabled
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Autochk > Proxy
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience > AitAgent
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience > Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience > ProgramDataUpdater

    I don't see
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience > StartupAppTask
    as Martin wrote.

I realize that that is not exactly what Martin advised. But I did it, and I hope that I was right.

    @FanJ
Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows is created when you apply Gpedit configuration (disable CEIP). If you set it to "not configured", registry key will be deleted.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows is present whether you change Gpedit settings or you don't.

    You did right.
While in Task Scheduler, navigate to Customer Experience Improvement Program folder and disable all tasks in there also.

    Thank you, Minimalist !!

Those are disabled already there (it are the only ones there):
Consolidator ( \Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program)
KernelCeipTask ( \Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program)
UsbCeip ( \Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program)

    True.
A trick that I use, that is to web search for a Microsoft knowledge base article that handles the regarding term,
and then change the language, by changing the country and language syntax part, for instance change nl-nl to en-us, or vice versa.
That way, I can usually find the appropriate Windows or Microsoft term in the chosen language.

    Those are default services.
I think you can leave them as they are.

You can find some information regarding those services at Black Viper:
    Diagnostic Policy Service
    Diagnostic Service Host
    Diagnostic System Host

To keep it simple, you can use the Control Panel option to disable Customer Experience Improvement Program.
That is why I mentioned Control Panel first, in my yesterday post.
I don't know why Martin Brinkmann started with Group Policy and Registry, instead of keeping it simple and starting with the Control Panel option.

As you use the use the Dutch version of Windows 7, you can find "Programma voor verbetering van de gebruikerservaring" (= Customer Experience Improvement Program) by typing/pasting the term gebruikerservaring in the Menu Start search box.

Also have a look at the bottom three paragraphs of my post at Security.NL, in Dutch language, regarding

Don't worry about registry keys. If you set an option using Gpedit, it will set correct registry key. Users with Home version of Windows can use registry editor to configure it, since they can't use Gpedit.
