I just got a Windows update notification for some 30 (!!!!!!!) updates, including

Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 update for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2
    and
User-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 update for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2.

There are updates for Southern Sudan and every other ##*~!~!* thing. Really.

Usually there are one to four updates for each notification. I'm wondering if someone at MS has run amok, or what. Is this update normal? I have not seen such a thing before, so I am running it by y'all security types.

Thank for any advice or wisdom.

May was a heavy month for W7 x64 updates, and possibly some of those had originally been planned for this month but got pushed forward to May as more urgent than originally thought. I agree that, going by MS's advance notifications, June looks to be a lot quieter in comparison, at least for this system.

How long Microsoft is producing OSs ?! And again it's not able to do an OS strong and safe !! some vulnerability can exists in all OSs, but with Windows is an incessant and massive updating.

Windows has updates once a month.
Linux almost daily but of course those are not all security updates.

as long as those updates fix things and don`t break them... ;)

Sure, you try making (or even designing) a strong and safe OS for billions of different users (most not experienced in IT) that's targeted by virtually all cyber-criminals, governments, and whatnot. It probably wouldn't need so many updates right?

The vulnerabilities are an issue of the OSs, of their code and their kernel, not of who use them. If I remember, MS never wrote or re-wrote the code of Windows versions, they are a kind of geological stratification :D

Vista was a significant re-write of many aspects of the Windows kernel (NT 6.0), and the start of Microsoft taking security seriously. This was taken further with Windows 7 (NT 6.1) and Windows 8 (NT 6.2).

    hi
would really like to know about mac osx (i guess the last version is Mountain Lion 10.8.4 ) , ps but is really so cheap $19.99?

i mean does apple release so many updates to fix security issues ?

sadly i guess osx could not be installed on a pc machine for legal right

does someone know about how many update did/does apple release to make their os "secure"?

    thanks

Windows has updates TWICE a month. Several updates on the second Super Tuesday of every month and one or two updates on the next to last Tuesday of the month.

To add to what NormanF has said - MS dont always do a 2nd release in a month and they can release any time, such as Security Essentials updates.

i had to reboot into Windows to to the Windows Updates this morning with some other stuff i had to test.

after it's done and rebooted i tried the Windows Updates Cleanup but i aborted after 45 minutes of waiting... :cautious:

not the first time either i have the same problems with cleaning the leftovers left behind by Windows Updates. :thumbd:

Weird you should say this. I did Windows Updates Cleanups this month and it took nearly an hour to finish. Usually it takes a few minutes, really odd. Replicated this on 3 machines so far.

Despite taking a very long time, it DOES eventually finish though. Looking at the task manager showed that a few Windows processes were chugging along the CPU and disk usage.

so what does it do for one hour, cleaning up about 150 megs of Windows Updates?
chew up my SSD drive? ;)

i'm really starting to wonder about the quality control that's put into this...

I had over 1GB of things it wanted to delete. At a guess it is permanently installing patches and removing their ability to be uninstalled by deleting backup installers.

mine said it wanted to delete 260 MB of stuff.

after 45 minutes i just assumed the thing is buggy and cancelled the cleanup.
when i rebooted, it wanted to continue doing that work in repair mode.

i had enough by that time and just deleted the whole partition.

Windows Update Cleanup took 15 to 30 minutes on a fast computer and almost 2 hours on a slow computer. Very time consuming.

Super Tuesday o_O or Patch Tuesday?

Everybody knows that there is only one Patch Tuesday each month.

There are also the so called "out of band" Microsoft security updates.

    Not correct.
There is not just one patch Tuesday, there can be (and has been numerous times) a second patch Tuesday, even your Wikipedia article you qouted states that.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/understanding-windows-automatic-updating

"Microsoft typically releases important updates on the second or fourth Tuesday of the month. However, updates could be released at any time."

I repeat: Everybody knows that there is only one Patch Tuesday each month.
But you can count as much as you wish.

Loads of updates wouldn't be such a problem if they didn't take so long to apply. Not sure why exactly Windows updates take so long, compared to updates on every other OS I've used; but they do and it's annoying.

(IDE disk I/O = ~50 MB/s. Broadband connection = 1 MB/s. So why do Windows updates take three times longer to install than to download? Even if this is completely random I/O, it shouldn't be that slow, should it?)
