That makes me sad. It was a very good product that met my needs well.

In fact the free version was good enough for me! I upgraded to Pro just to support development...:)

It is still an excellent product. The reason I did not renew my subscription is Win 10 with MS Defender which has had excellent results with most testing organizations and its performance impact is as good as Avira or Kaspersky on my machine. If my OS was Windows 7 or 8.1 I would certainly pay for Avira again , but Win 10 is arguably the first Windows OS that is truly self-contained, with a reliable backup system one can cope with just about any type of contingency.

    The old Avira Pro, yes.
The new Avira Security it is just a bloatware.

Anon, I switched to Windows Defender about 6 months ago, therefore I don't know whether there has been any changes, but checking the Avira website Avira Pro is still advertised:

    Not any, many.

Which not runs alone but installs a lot of bloat.

Well... Whatever, I'm not concerned anymore as I won't pay for any AVs in the future, furthermore I'd like to add that the average $40 a year charged by most AV companies is ridiculously high particularly considering W. Defender is free and ad free. The price of an AV shouldn't be more than $5 to $10 a year, but this is perhaps off topic and in my case irrelevant.

Yes, at this time you can still install "Avira Pro" from your account. Then at some point the installer for Avira Security will update you to the "Security" suite. Then the old UI is gone and you have all kinds of BS Avira programs and services installed on your machine without permission!

    Ugh!!!

Yes, I agree that Windows Defender is probably all that you need on Windows 10 as far as AV goes. In fact that is what I am using on my Win 10 laptop (not my main PC).

But if you are familiar with the "need to know" doctrine of compartmented security, [ https://www.techopedia.com/definition/24820/compartmented-security-mode ] I really don't want Microsoft to know everything about my computer, except what they need to offer their OS reliably as a service. They already own the OS and collect all sorts of information about what programs I use and how I use the computer. An AV has privileged access to info about everything you do on the PC and net as it scans your activities and chats with their cloud servers to assess the risk, so MS Defender gives them access to an even bigger profile in one shot. By splitting this knowledge across different companies, I would hope that it achieves a better balance of "need to know" among the players, in my opinion.

Point taken, this could be arguably the only issue to choose a third party AV to the dedicated Windows Defender, however no-one will be able to guarantee 100% that personal data might not be sold to advertisers by third party AVs. I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook, but I've decided that in the grand scheme of things it is better for me to communicate how I feel about the world I live in than to live a life of an anonymous recluse. Obviously there is a price to pay and that is one's own privacy. I use my laptop as a real terminal, sensitive and important data is kept elsewhere, yes my browsing history is up for grabs and my mail is checked by Gmail, why should I worry about MS? To each his own...

In Avira Support says: "We’re here to help"
Actually: We're here to say lies and to ban you if you ask further questions........

If something is unclear, please let us know, we are happy to help ban....

Just saw their reply. That is absurd! They think that it is their job to mess up a system by cleaning the registry which often causes more harm than any good.

Me too. The no-customization thing for Antivirus Pro is the deal breaker for me.

I would've never imagined this day would come. Anon, the number one Avira supporter saying this says a lot as to where the company has become. They just couldn't leave a perfectly fine AV with a simple interface alone! they had to destroy it just like most companies have done (ie. Bitdefender, McAfee, etc.)

    Yup!

And it's not just the interface! That has a potential for future improved capabilities. But Avira Pro now bundles and installs additional components from the "Security" suite without asking, and with no options to customize the install. Avira then makes it difficult or impossible to completely remove components that you do not want.

They have clearly joined the "me too" bandwagon to provide an uber nanny for the masses, like so many other companies. "AV is not enough anymore" is their excuse for this, and the apparent rallying cry for their new business model. :(
