Why can't they get lots of things right on Windows? I've been using it for 30 years, I expected it to be more refined by now.

Plus @xxJackxx, all the resources are right there for them (30+ years as you say) to by now have a Powerhouse O/S relatively fully equipped, from simple Home user's to huge conglomerate corporations.

My guess, and that's all it is at this point, but MS went off track when wireless handsets became all the rave and MS wanted to tap into that same market, starting with Windows 8.1 (My all time favorite O/S-Now Win 11). Instead of ramping up Windows for better productivity and expanding on what they had, they derailed themselves IMO, and went sideways.

Here's a proof. Windows CODE is still mostly the same. I find that i can even still run some Windows 98 32bit programs ON WINDOWS 11 with ease, XP 32/64bit programs as well courtesy SysWow by a few simple placements easily copied to over from those now, old early O/S's.

Refining Windows correctly for customers/user's should have already been well established i agree.

Some of the kiddish things that we seen them bloat Windows with, is enough to make one wonder if their development personnel ever completed high school.

Everything is bloated these days, not only Windows. Subscription services, TV, the internet, autos, cities, politics, etc. You name it, it's either bloated and/or high-end "artisan" everything. So, MS is really only following the pack or moving along with rest of the herd. Word. :argh:

Windows settings is pointless, long live Control Pane

Nerds unite! I present thee with an important article discussing recent Microsoft announcement about deprecation of Control Panel, including rewording of the statement to migration following public outcry, fundamental reasons why touch-like interfaces when used on the desktop have inferior looks, functionality and efficiency, outstanding, decade-long problems in Settings - lack of parity with Control Panel, complicated and unnecessary workflows, bad ergonomics and usability, historical context regarding touch-like interfaces and smartphones, philosophical question regarding software development, implications for the future of the desktop, and more. Enjoy.

Settings will never have the easy access and functionality of the Control Panel for me.
I think Printers are handled more comprehensibly in the CP.

Absolutely. The whole approach is completely misguided. It needs to start from scratch, if anything.

Good point, I can't believe that Windows Explorer still has the exact same bugs as 25 years ago, M$ should be ashamed of themselves.

To be honest, I was never a big fan of the Control Panel, but the new Settings app should become way better, that's for sure.

Have you ever seen CP to crash, it just works. Settings is a scripted nightmare, it is UWP app, it works, when it feels like it and on top of it, settings are all over the place, thus you have to use search, CP has a logical hierarchy.

For me, the Control Panel is one of the quick and efficient ways of getting to your settings. The settings in Win10/11 GUI is a mess and I spend more time there trying to find something that no longer exists in the Control Panel. Click ... click ..click ..click. To each his own though.

Agreed. I suspect the new Settings was somewhat made for touchscreens. We needed to find the "Windows Features" option at work the other day. Had to search for it. It sucks they took the Add/Remove Programs out of the Control Panel and replaced it with that.

By the way, you have got love when you want to setup something quickly and you have to wait for Settings to load all the ADs and suggestions.

Over here i have had to resort to another of Sordom's https://www.sordum.org/14479/windows-11-classic-context-menu-v1-2/ very useful tools (instead of StartAllBack) to prevent that insidious stupid delay of being forced into extra mouse pointer clicks just to display my custom list menu which saves eons of time as well as very important frequently used programs. Simple more efficient productivity, which MS seems to be losing focus on in support of their eye candy. Show More Options is a terrible idea for the right click menu.

Agreed, I made that registry change a long time ago. Not only are the new context menus lacking items, they are slow and often if right clicking a file it looses focus before the menu comes up and I get the wrong menu. The happens most with files on the desktop. Between that and Start11 my PC is almost usable. :D

I've had it since May in the Release Preview channel. This will not be exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. Good luck getting it onto unsupported hardware though. Much more difficult than previous releases.

Do you notice a slowdown with notepad as much as i do? Dark theme here.

With 10 and earlier, after entering text or amending, i use to simply click x and text would either autosave or show save as prompt. Now on 11 the entered text is ignored, adding yet another extra manual clicks to the ribbon menu in order to save the text.

I think Notepad forgot its purpose. It is horribly slow now. Depending on what I am doing I prefer PSPad (light and fast) or Visual Studio Code (for writing any actual code).

Try 'Ctrl + S' to save in Windows 11 Pro. It has worked well for me.
