I've more or less adjusted to having win 8.0 on one of our computers and haven't had any compelling reason to upgrade to 8.1. (Still prefer win 7, but that's another story.) Someone recently told me the upgrade is mandatory and I won't be getting any future windows updates unless and until I upgrade. Is that true?

if that's the case, I will of course upgrade. Is the upgrade process a smooth one? Any potential problems I should be aware of?

    Thanks,
    Len

It is mandatory not just by MS, but also by other companies like AMD. AMD does not support drivers for Windows 8.0 since 14.6.

You'll get updates for Win 8.0 until January 12, 2016.
