I am currently using Windows 8 and have learned to live with it. Everything runs smoothly except Diskeeper Pro 12, a problem many Diskeeper Pro 12 and Windows 8 and 8.1 users have reported on their forums.

I have been reading about the mandatory Update 1 to Windows 8.1, which because of many issues has now been extended a month until June 10. My understanding is that this means that if you do not upgrade Windows 8.1 with Update 1, you will not receive any further updates to Windows 8.1 after June 10.

Does the mandatory upgrade of Windows 8.1 with Update 1 by June 10 also mean that I must upgrade my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 by that date?

I am a big believer in "If it ain't broken, don't fix it," and there is nothing in Windows 8.1 that really makes we want to update to 8.1.

According to my understanding it is mandatory. My recommendation is to make a full backup of your system, do the upgrade, and if you have issues you can restore the backup. These "many issues" you speak of are likely greatly exaggerated, like most things you read about today. I have had or witnessed no issues personally. Not to say they can't happen, but if that is what is holding you back I think you are worrying too much.

There is a different "deadline" for Windows 8. It´s about two years from now, I don´t recall the exact date. Check in Windows 8 forum.

not only is it mandatory, but even if it was not you would be missing on bug fixes, security updates, improvement, etc.
black and white TVs were not 'broken' either but you don't see too many people watching those. lol ;)

Windows 8 will be supported until 2016 – the mandatory thing applies to 8.1.

Like some others, I'm quite happy with 8 Pro – I have already decided to bypass 8.1 completely and upgrade to Windows 9 when it becomes available in 2015.

I'm also very happy with Windows 8, and see no reason to update to Win 8.1. My reluctance is also due to my first attempts to update which resulted in horrible black screens with latest Samsung machines. After many months of these problems occurring, I still can't get information whether these issues have been addressed by Samsung.

you can always make a disk image, and try to see if the updates work.
if they don't, you just restore the disk image.

I've run Diskeeper Pro 12 on roughly 30-40 systems, no problem at all. What problem is there?

Also, I would say upgrading to 8.1.1 is pretty mandatory, it's a whole lot better on the backend.
