Process Explorer also allows you to Google running processes with a right click on the item.

Another Vote for the unlisted Process Explorer - It's simply the best. :)

TaskInfo. It is better than Process Explorer, in particular on a Windows 98 SE system !

i think winpatrol free (BillP) can just about be classed as a task manager (on the extended task manager/full blown anti spyware app boundary)

it allows you to view services, current running tasks, scheduled tasks and auto startups, end a task, remove a process from autostart or disabled it. it doesn't have any abilty to view networking though.

Many to choose from besides the above mentioned. Process Explorer is very nice and compact with good configuration capabilities. I like the way some of the task managers give information about active network connections like Taskinfo. Others worth checking out are:

thanks for the additions SMF - task guardian looks very impressive - i think it leads the commercial applications if it does what it says on the tin.

we should maybe add Wintask 5 standard, less functionnalities than pro (comparison), but more cheap.

To all: nice info, thanks !!!

(maybe the thread belongs more at the Software & Services forum-section, but that is of course up to the mods).

Maybe we could tell why we think that a certain program is better or not ;)

As for myself: I am open for other opinions ;)

I myself have on my W 98 SE machine in the first place TaskInfo and WinTasks Pro installed (licenced user of both).

And I have an old version of FaberToys; maybe I should look again at it.

In a previous posting I said something about TaskInfo and Process Explorer.
Let me tell a bit more.
    (I know, I'm a fan of TaskInfo).
Two remarks just as an example:
    1.
The site of Process Explorer says it is version 9.2
Downloading it gives you version 9.25
    2.
In a recent thread about the CPU usage of BOClean
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=109666
folks posted screenshots from Process Explorer.
Well, Process Explorer does not give me that option on W98SE.
The site of Process Explorer tells indeed that it doesn't for W98SE.
But: TaskInfo gives me that option on a W98SE box.
OK, not like those screenies, but it does give me the info !

    Now about WinTasks Pro:

(Yup, there is indeed also a non-pro version.)
It is definitely a program that cannot be ignored so easily.
Nice (older) review at the Wilders-org site:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/wintaskspro.html
I like to have it in combo with TaskInfo !
(OK, you might call it a bit over-kill ;)).
And, don't forget for example it's scripting possibilities ! ;)
(hm, off-topic: very recently I found again that when I click for upgrades/updates that it tells me there is a newer version 5.03 while I have 5.04 installed; I did email the company, no reply as of yet).

I have to put in my vote for Whats Running from www.whatsrunning.net also. It offers even more detail and info than Process Explorer.. extremely nice utility.

Another vote for Process Explorer. Go thorugh the options and double click on various processes, there's not much more that the paid ones offer... not enough worth paying for, anyway.

For another free alternative that does give more info, check out TopToBottomNT - http://www.smidgeonsoft.prohosting.com/toptobottomnt-system-explorer.html (also see NTDevices on the same site)

Third on my list is What's Running, although I've never had occasion to use it with the others on board.
