Ford Delays Launch Of ‘Hands-Free’ BlueCruise Driver Assistance Function Until 2022

BlueCruise, the “hands-free” driver assistance feature that Ford sees as a viable competitor to GM’s Super Cruise and Tesla’s Autopilot, won’t reach car owners until the first quarter of 2022, company executives said Wednesday evening. The automaker originally planned to release an over-the-air (OTA) software update before the end of 2021 that will activate BlueCruise for select Ford customers.

In an earnings call with investors, Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company’s engineers needed a little more time to make the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) easier for customers to use.

“We wanted to improve the customer experience,” Farley says. “So we pushed it back in terms of an OTA because we want it to be much easier for the customer than originally planned. And that takes a little planning to consolidate. Often these Level 2 systems require multiple updates to the car. We want it to be very simple. That required a bit more work from our team.”

Granted, there aren’t many cities where self-driving water taxis are a viable option, but Amsterdam may just be one of those places. This week, scientists from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Senseable City Laboratory launched the first self-navigating, fully autonomous robot boats. They call ’em Roboats (geddit?), and they made their maiden voyages in the canals today.

The boats are big enough to carry five people. The team suggests they can also be used to collect waste, deliver goods and do other boaty things that people do with boats. The straight-out-of-Blade Runner vessels are battery-powered and can charge wirelessly when they’re at the dock. The team claims there’s enough juice on board for 10 hours of operation.
To autonomously determine a free path and avoid crashing into objects, Roboat uses lidar and a number of cameras to enable a 360-degree view.

Electric vehicle maker Nuro said Tuesday it had secured $600 million in funding from Google, Kroger and others to continue the development of its autonomous delivery vehicle service.

The Silicon Valley robotics company has already made thousands of grocery deliveries with Kroger as a part of a 2018 partnership.

“Demand for local deliveries is exploding,” said Griffin Schroeder, partner at Tiger Global, which led the new round of financing. “Nuro is the bridge to an era of sustainable, low cost, autonomous local delivery.”

Much of Waymo's self-driving vehicle testing has largely focused on warm climates, but it's about to give those machines a harsher trial. Waymo will start driving its autonomous Chrysler Pacifica vans in New York City on November 4th. This and a later wave of Jaguar I-Pace EVs will rely on human drivers to map streets and learn from the environment, but the goal is clearly to achieve full autonomy.

The test will focus on Manhattan below Central Park (aka midtown and lower Manhattan), including the financial district and a portion of New Jersey through the Lincoln Tunnel. All tests will operate during daylight.

Self-driving trucks startup TuSimple signaled it is close to testing its system without a human safety operator on public roads before the end of the year. During the startup’s third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, TuSimple announced plans to proceed with its driver-out pilot program, which would remove the driver for runs over the 80-mile route between the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

“We expect to perform the initial driver runs before year end and to complete the pro pilot program over the coming months,” Cheng Lu, TuSimple’s president and CEO, said during the call.
If TuSimple can begin this program before 2022, it will put the company in one of the leading positions against the competition.

GM's self-driving Cruise division has launched its fully driverless robo-taxi service in San Francisco, with co-founder and President Kyle Vogt getting the first ride. To start with, the service will be available for free to GM employees and certain members of the public, TechCrunch reported.

"Earlier this week, I requested a ride through our Cruise app and took several back-to-back rides in San Francisco — with no one else in the vehicle," Vogt wrote in a YouTube video description. "There are lots of other Cruise employees (not just me) who are testing and refining the full customer experience as we take another major step toward the first commercial AV [ride hailing] product in a dense urban environment."

Call me the ultimate skeptic but I like to think practical. I just don't see this self driving as anything less but a accident in the making. Those vehicles ARE NOT like trolley cars of the past. AND there are no underground magnetics to guide them and keep them on a predetermined course like mag-rail. Some like myself are not sold in the least that these vehicles are worth the risk they will pose. If it's electronic guidance what's to happen when software goes Wacky and/or the signals are hacked into remotely too.

Automakers are pouring billions of dollars into developing self-driving cars, which are seen as the future of motoring.

Founded in 2016 by a team of AI engineers from Microsoft Research Asia, Momenta is using a data-driven approach, with its algorithm able to turn sensory information about a vehicle and its surroundings into actionable information in real time. Collecting the billions of data points to power the algorithm of data requires vast amounts of driving, hence the need to partner with auto producers.

As reported by Bloomberg late on Friday, Apple has hired away Tesla’s former Autopilot software director Christopher Moore. Bloomberg says Moore will report to Stuart Bowers, another former Tesla employee.

Apple has been not-so-quietly working on a self-driving electric car project for more than five years, codenamed Project Titan. The group has seen much leadership turnover with reports claiming Apple keeps shifting the goalposts on what it wants to achieve.
The current state of Apple’s self-driving software stack remains very much unclear. Apple runs a small test fleet of prototype autonomous vehicles in California. The system is believed to rely on video cameras and LiDAR radars to sense the surrounding environment.

Automakers, suppliers and startups aiming to roll out automated driving features, robotaxis and self-driving trucks are a little closer to accessing Nvidia’s newest compute and sensor toolkit.

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang announced Tuesday at the company’s fall GTC event that Hyperion 8 — a production-ready platform that includes sensors, compute and software needed for AV development — is now available to buy for 2024 vehicle models.
Hyperion 8 is the latest iteration of the end-to-end Nvidia Drive platform that automakers can use customize to their likening and needs. Hyperion 8 was first revealed in April. However, some details, including which companies are supplying the 12 cameras, nine radars and one lidar that are part of the platform, weren’t revealed until Tuesday.

Notably, Luminar is supplying the lidar, a potential boon for the newly public company. Continental, Hella, Sony and Valeo are also supplying sensors to Nvidia for the Hyperion 8.

Kodiak Robotics, a startup developing self-driving truck technologies, today announced that it raised $125 million in an oversubscribed series B round for a total of $165 million to date.

“Our series B drives us into hyper-growth so we can double our team, our fleet, and continue to scale our business,” Burnette said in a statement. “With [it], we will further accelerate towards launching our commercial self-driving service with our partners in the coming years to help address these critical challenges.”
While autonomous trucks could face challenges in commercializing at scale until clearer regulatory guidelines are established, the technology has the potential to reduce the cost of trucking from $1.65 per mile to $1.30 per mile by mid-decade, to a Pitchbook analysis.
That’s perhaps why in the first half of 2021, investors poured a record $5.6 billion into driverless trucking companies, eclipsing the $4.2 billion invested in all of 2020.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it is looking into a consumer report that a Tesla (TSLA.O) Model Y was involved in an accident while using the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta software.

The car "gave an alert half way through the turn" and the driver tried to assume control "but the car by itself took control and forced itself into the incorrect lane," the report says. The car was severely damaged on the driver side, the owner added.

"NHTSA is aware of the consumer complaint in question and is in communication with the manufacturer to gather additional information," an NHTSA spokesperson told Reuters on Friday.

Apple has increased the number of drivers for its fleet of autonomous vehicles, with the headcount of testers for its self-driving vehicle systems now at 137 people.

Apple has been steadily increasing its group of drivers used to collect data and trial its self-driving car technology on roads in the United States. The company has continued the upward trend by adding more people to the roster.
In data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles seen by MacReports, Apple has increased the number of driver permits by 23, bringing the total number of its drivers up to 137. In September, the count was at 114, while in August and May, it was 92 drivers and 76 drivers respectively.

The latest figures also reveal that Apple has still yet to apply for a driverless vehicle permit. Of the others, Cruise has increased its driverless fleet from 5 to 20 permits, with Waymo still in the lead with 34.

Data on collisions for autonomous vehicles show that Apple has added one more to its records, bringing it to a total of six collisions on file.

Apollo Go, Baidu’s robotaxi service, aims to be in 65 cities by 2025 and 100 cities by 2030, the firm’s co-founder and CEO Robin Li said on an analyst call Wednesday.
That’s a big batch of licenses that Baidu needs to obtain from local regulators.
