Patch My PC Updater - Check for Software Updates

    I have been using UCheck Premium for several years and paying the price, but recently the interface and scan results have become SO cluttered and too often incorrect. For example, it downloaded a new version of WinZip that all of a sudden was subscription-based. I had a lifetime paid license for Version 25, and I needed nothing in the new subscription-based version. I managed to recover from that debacle by using a System Restore Point.

    I gave PatchMyPC a test run this afternoon. What could I lose? It is freeware for home users. I was IMPRESSED! It has a nice clean interface, it is portable, and it is fast. It has lots of options to enable the user to configure its operations to suit his/her preferences.

    Guess who won't be renewing his UCheck Premium license?

    Just my two cents. Have a great day.

    Regards,
    Phil

    thx, i will have a look.
    idd ucheck is a bit overfilled with informations. in special the "upgrade" "get premium" and similar hints are extremly annoying.

    advantage patchypc: it found older MS Vc++ libs
    maybe i should try winget instead for this, windows did update nothing.

    btw
    current is 4.5.04

    I've tried PatchMyPC numerous times, the latest 10 minutes ago after reading your post, same result as always.
    PatchMyPC picked up 9 programs on my computer, Ucheck picked up 100. What am I doing wrong as every time I try Patch it picks up barely anything.

    PatchMyPC finds very few updates. Currently it finds 5 updates on my PC, whereas UCheck finds 52.
    I can understand why it did that, as it was a new version. With any software updaters you should be careful what you let them update, for cases like your one, where you have a license for a specific software version.

    I also tried UCheck and PatchMyPC. As mentioned by @garioch7 above, UCheck is too cluttered and too often incorrect - uninstalled.
    Unfortunately, PatchMyPC is not a good alternative because it doesn't find many apps to be updated - uninstalled.
    By the way, I wouldn't allow any software updater to download and install apps.

    UCheck is currently reporting 46 "updates for my desktop computer. The problem is that the programs are already up-to-date! I am attaching a screen image of UCheck findings for my desktop, first screen. Everything listed is already up-to-date.

    PatchMyPC checks only for 300 programs, so it is not a complete solution, but it checks a lot of the programs that I use and that don't notify you of available updates unless you open the program or manually initiate a "Check for Updates" within the program. I never said the program was perfect, but I far prefer it to UCheck having test-driven it.

    You say everything listed is up to date. But for every app listed in the screenshot, UCheck has found a new version. Based on your screenshot, I highly doubt for example that you are running Bitdefender v27, or v16 of EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. Maybe when you launch the apps, they are not finding updates, but once again, the screenshot clearly shows that there are updates.

    The problem with UCheck is that it relies exclusively on the version number in the installed software's registry key. In the case of Macrium Reflect, the currently installed version can be determined only from the executable (Macrium updates do not update the version number in the registry.) A case can be made that Windows should require that the registry reflect the current version, but it does not. And UCheck would be more useful if it dealt with that reality.

    @roger_m ,

    UCheck is finding "new" versions that are already installed! It can't be trusted. I don't know why UCheck is so confused about the versions of the software on my computer.

    If I click on the "Action" button for any of these 46 alleged "Updates," the only two options are: "Skip this Update" and "Exclude Software." There is NO option to select those programs for updating.

    UCheck has become a mess, which is why I have moved on to PatchMyPC, even though I still have over a year on my UCheck subscriptions for both of my computers.

    This is just my experience. YMMV. Have a great day.

    Phil

    @roger_m ,

    Thanks for the advice. I am a member of the Adlice Forums, but I have grown disillusioned with their products. UCheck was the last of their products that I purchased. For the last six months or so, UCheck has started listing installed programs that are already up-to-date. I have dealt with Tigzy before, but I don't want to be a beta tester.

    If this were an issue for other customers, I am sure that Tigzy would be aware. I am happy to move on to software that works the way I expect.

    Have a great day.

    Regards,
    Phil

    I wonder why the portable version is still at v4.5.0.4? It says I'm using the latest version, or am I missing something?

    This was the last portable version.

    Yeah, OK. I am surprised though, that it never either suggested I upgrade, or didn't automatically upgrade at some point. Unless I seen @Nanobot 's post I would have no idea.
