Previously installed the security only patch with no problems and have since then installed the January rollup with WU and everything is OK. Win.7 64bit

    Why do you install both?

I understood differently. I presume that earlier, wolfrun installed the security only patches, but has now switched to installing rollups.

He changed his mind in a matter of 2 days. Hopefully he will respond.

Ah, you're right, I see, I overlooked that.
It could be that wolfrun was talking about different computers. But now I'm only speculating.

I installed the Security Patch KB3212642 and January Rollup KB3212646 via WU on separate days.

Oh I see, you installed them a day apart. Is there a specific reason why you install both on the same system?

The security patch KB3212642 can be downloaded from either here at http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx or from Mister X's posts. January Rollup came up as a notice through the Windows Update venue which was KB3212646 which is where I installed that update from. o_O

The Monthly Rollup includes the security updates. If you want everything that Microsoft sends in the way of updates, install the monthly rollup.

If you ONLY want the security updates and no other updates, select the security-only updates.

There is no need to install both.

Yep. you are right. quote: "The security fixes that are listed in Security Only Quality Update 3212642 are also included in January 2017 Security Monthly Quality Rollup 3212646. Installing either update 3212642 or 3212646 installs the security fixes that are listed here." Will keep an eye on this next month. :)

    Thanks emmjay. Good to know!

In that TechNet blog Nathan Mercer wrote that it is done to reduce the package size of the Security Only update, and that it is done because "(enterprise) customers have requested increased flexibility for deploying the Security Only updates for Windows independently of the fixes for Internet Explorer".

Important is also this: "Note that the Internet Explorer update will not install or upgrade to the latest supported version of Internet Explorer if not already present".

At the end of the blog there is also a table with info about the several updates.

The name of IE fixe(s), in case there are such fixes, is the familiar "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer".

What I don't know though, is whether a Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer will now also include extra "goodies" like telemetry which users of Security Only updates are trying to avoid. Maybe not, but it isn't clear to me at the moment. Maybe others have posted about it; I don't know at the moment. Maybe we have to wait and see what will happen when such an IE update comes out.

Until now telemetry updates were not included in security only updates.

I think to know the answer, but just to be sure: the 7 SP1 Convenience Rollup KB3125574 ( 64 BIT ) contains ALL the updates subsequent the SP1, not only the security updates, is it ?

Yes, it is as it's name implies, it is a rollup of all updates since SP1 (security and non-security) Windows updates. Some previous updates that are no longer relevant are removed, so it is also a cleanup. It is used by some people to make a re-install go faster.

Thank you. As I imagined. I always install only ecurity updates ( some other update only when it's really needful ), so this roll up it's useless for me. :(

Make sure IE11 is installed first and then usually installing the 2 updates below will pull in the rest of the updates.

    KB3020369
    KB3172605

In Control Panel--updates-- select 'never search or install updates' first and reboot before you install the 2 updates above.
After installing them both, reboot, then re-enable Win Updates again.

I have a doubt: in the new roll up updates system, the last " only security update " contains all the security updates since the SP1 ?
