    Thanks for the input.
I did get the Dec 2017 qualitly update but since then zero. I was thinking Microsoft had some issues with the Meltdown patch (?) and that's why it was delayed but it's end of March and I got worried.
Although I only have on demand virusscan such as hitmanpro I'll look into what @emmjay suggested. Who knows, the registry entry might've changed without notice.

OK. As you do not use an AV, you have to make that registry change.

    I'll look into this. Thanks.
Is it possible that if I only use portable AV's I still need to add this key?

Oh. I got it backwards. So if I don't have an AV, I have to add the key to get quality rollups?

@emmjay @mood - Thanks a lot guys. Funny this one passed over my head. Wilders is King.
Funnier still, Secunia reports 100% patched system..!

You might want to reconsider Secunia. They announced that they are getting out of the game. Look at Belarc or PatchMyPC or SUMO.

@FanJ @emmjay : Wow. No, I had no clue Secunia will be dropped. I think I'm seriously lagging behind in terms of security news.
Thanks for the update! I'll look into Sumo as this is the one I've heard most about.
Anything else I should be aware of? :-D
I haven't been able to visit Wilders for quite a long time...

Hm... I don't have the entry "QualityCompat". I've made one manually and will reboot and revert with my findings. :)

Edit 2 : Nope. WU doesn't find any updates. Perhaps one of those "recommended" updates are necessary.

I installed the quality compat manually about 6 weeks ago and then downloaded all the updates for my Win 7 - 64 bit and it slowed my machine to a crawl.
I took an image prior to doing this (thankyou Macrium) which I restored and my computer was back to it's zippy self.
I would rather have a 'usable' computer than one which is snail like but a little more secure.

    All the best anyway.

Then to just receive updates and disable Spectre/Meltdown mitigation to prevent conflicts, run this script:
    Code:
    reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat /v cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v FeatureSettingsOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f
    reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v FeatureSettingsOverrideMask /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f

So I managed to fix the issue by installing all recommended updates and removing them (!) except for a hotfix that I thought wasn't related to this problem (still don't). Now WU downloads Feb quality rollup without issues. Registry fix was done manually.
However, March quality rollup is only listed as preview.

The March quality rollup for Windows 7/64 is currently being held from windows update by Microsoft. For many people it is unchecked and for others it has disappeared altogether. It is possible that they will pull it altogether.

It is very buggy. MS say that they are working on fixing it so it is best that you wait. You do not want to have to go through a recovery process.

Would you advise the March Security Only update instead or is it also buggy?
The problem is the March Security fixes are needed for a vulnerability worse than Meltdown:

The Security only updates is what I install in my W7. As far as I can tell, the one for March is just fine. No issue whatsoever.

There is nothing in the wild, of any consequence, for either meltdown or Spectre. The March updates, both the cumulative and security-only have several known issues and MS is currently not recommending the monthly be installed. However, the vulnerability introduced in the JAN/FEB updates for W7/64 is more dire. You are a lot more likely to get bit by the latter than the former. I installed the security-only (it has not been pulled). You could always back that out when MS gives the all clear on the monthly, if you are so disposed.

No problem here either with the March Security Only Update installed. No issues what so ever.
