Both Firefox and LibreWolf in about : profiles > Open Directory box when clicked on
DO open. It's when I upgraded to Linux Mint 21 that the problem seemed to occur.

First you said, in about:profiles, clicking Open Directory didn't open the directory; now you say it does open the directory. I must have lost track somewhere.

Do you mean the problem only occurs with Linux Mint 21? If so, I do not know what can be the cause. I have no experience with Linux Mint.

Did you notice both Brummelchen and I mentioned AppArmor and wondered if it could be that AppArmor has something to do with blocking access to those directories in about:profiles?

I'll hopefully make it more clear. When I was on Mint 20.3 Firefox
on the about : profiles page clicking on the [Open Directory] box
and it opened. Apparmor module is loaded so that doesn't seem to
cause any issue with the Firefox profiles. (Firefox v.130.0)

When upgrading to Mint 21 from 20.3 that's when I noticed clicking
on Firefox [Open Directory] that it DID NOT open.
I didn't change any Apparmor settings AFAIK from Mint 20.3 to 21.

Also in Mint 20.3 and 21 Firefox doesn't remove the web addresses
typed into [Manage Exceptions...] under Cookies and Site Data when
closing the browser. All boxes are checked to do so including under History.

Same holds true for LibreWolf as well which is a custom and independent
version of Firefox. Hopefully this clears things up.

OK, that is clear, that behavior changed when you upgraded Linux Mint 20.3 to Mint 21.

As others in this thread don't see that changed behavior, it is most likely it has to do with something that changed in Mint 21, or some change in your settings that you are not aware of.

Did you also post at the Linux Mint forums? If it is something that has to do with a change in Linux Mint 21, I guess other Mint users might be able to confirm your issue, and perhaps even find out what's the cause and how to resolve that issue.

An important question is: was this any different in earlier Firefox versions with the same settings?

As I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure, but I would think websites listed in [Manage Exceptions...] under Cookies and Site Data should not be cleared automatically when closing the browser. If the user listed websites in [Manage Exceptions...] with reason, why would Firefox clear the list when closing the browser?

And even if sites are listed in [Manage Exceptions...] under Cookies and Site Data, if under History in [Settings...] all boxes are checked, after closing and reopening Firefox you should see no cookies and site data are saved in [Manage Data...] under Cookies and Site Data.

Only when under History in [Settings...] the box for "Site settings" is unchecked, then data from sites listed in [Manage Exceptions...] will be saved after closing and reopening Firefox and will show in [Manage Data...] under Cookies and Site Data.

I'll check around to see if others have same issue with
profiles in Firefox. I did notice that during the upgrade
to Mint 21 Apparmor was listed and looked like changes were
being made. Hard to read terminal screen at that fast pace.
Also I checked both files in Firefox (installs.ini & profiles.ini)
Both say Locked=1. Changing it to 0(zero) didn't do nothing.
I am able to open Firefox profile from the default folder, but
not from the Open Directory box when clicked on.

As far as Firefox and LibreWolf go at one time AFAIK (couldn't tell
you when) they automatically cleared websites listed in Manage Exceptions
when the browsers closed. Not really a big problem since one can always
remove websites manually from Manage Exceptions.

Under Cookies and Site Data along with History you are correct.
0 bytes are listed for both Cookies and site data and 0 bytes
for Temporary cached files and pages.

Thanks for the info, @Compu KTed.
Regarding about:profiles and [Open Directory], I hope other Mint users might be able to help you with that.
Concerning Cookies and Site Data, good to know that you see that [Manage Data...] is cleared with closing and reopening Firefox.
Whether in the past [Manage Exceptions...] was cleared, I cannot tell you for sure, I don't remember, and I'm not going to try it now. Since a couple of years, I have one site listed in [Manage Exceptions...] to have its data not cleared from [Manage Data...]. (For that result, under History in [Settings...] the box for "Site settings" is unchecked.)

sorry to interrupt you, but this seems definitely a mint problem, NOT firefox.
create a backup of your profile, then reinstall mint from scratch.

if two similar but independent programs react same, then its mostly an OS issue.
do not search any longer for firefox/librewolf, this wont help you out.

    Regarding Firefox 131.0

If one doesn't like the tab preview, it can easily be disabled in Settings, General, Tabs, by unchecking the box for the "Show an image preview when you hover on a tab" option.

And if you don't want the 'List all tabs' button (Tab overview menu) in the Firefox tab bar, perhaps you disabled it in about:config earlier, and you notice the new button is not easy to disable.
I use userChrome.css code to disable that button now:
    Code:
/* Hide 'List all tabs' button (Tab overview menu) in Firefox tab bar */

    #alltabs-button {
      display: none !important;
    }

Unchecking the box for the "Show an image preview when you hover on a tab" option, sets about:config browser.tabs.hoverPreview.showThumbnails to false.

But even this setting, with the thumbnail image tab preview disabled, leaves a new version of the tab tooltip which is more flashy than the pre 131.0 tooltip. I find this new version of the tab tooltip annoying.

To restore the less flashy pre 131.0 tab tooltip, in about:config, I set browser.tabs.hoverPreview.enabled to false as well.

    Edit
An explanation of what I meant where I wrote 'flashy'.
By 'flashy', I mean the tab preview or the tab tooltip is almost instantly when you hover a tab or a series of tabs. When you quickly hover a series of tabs, you see all previews or tooltips one after another.
The pre 131.0 tab tooltip needs slightly more time to show up, and quickly hovering a series of tabs does not show all previews or tooltips one after another.
I find the pre 131.0 tab tooltip much easier on the eyes.
