I tried restore with Todo Backup Workstation. Here are the details https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/easeus-todo.373507/
Full Backup - Incremental Backup ---------------------------- Differential Backup (once a week) I can delete the in-between incremental backup, right? And Differential Backup time will be longer than previous Differential Backup i.e DBackup time will increase with each backup, right?
Absolutely. I have two icons setup on my desktop. One of the runs a backup to my F drive. The other to my G drive. The running it twice is far quicker then copying images.
If you're using that "jump drive" to store only your backup image and nothing else (image storage only), the size depends on how big your disk/partition is that you are going to be imaging. Macrium's image compression ratio is not great but does tend to run about 35% smaller (used DATA) than the disk/partition being imaged. If you plan on using that jump drive for both the Recovery Media (to do the imaging with) AND your backup image, it'll have to be about another 700mB larger than your planned image (space to hold the actual Recovery applications & OS). If you do this, after you create your Recovery Media you should reate a separate folder to hold your backup image.
Reflect will build your Recovery Media automatically... best to use at least a 1gB stick if it's only to be used as a Recovery Media and not an image storage device.
When you do DELETIONs of any Reflect backup image, it should be done under the Reflect UI, not via Windows Explorer.
Apologies for jumping in here only I'm a bit concerned about the above. I created a new backup regime a month ago that has not yet automatically deleted any of the new images. However I still have the previous series of images (Full and Differential) and have deleted some of the older ones via Windows Explorer. I have two questions: 1. Will the older Full and Differential images likely still be OK and 2. I cannot see where to delete these files via the Reflect UI. Your assistance would be most appreciated.
Cache have a look here http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/How to delete backup files I also use this way to delete my old full backups (with external drive attached) Of course other folk may do it differently!
Thanks for the input, Stapp. This is really the best way to manage images as Reflect knows which images are CHILDREN of which PARENT images and knows which images become invalid upon the deletion of a PARENT. When you do it this way, it offers those invalidated CHILDREN images for deletion as well. In Windows Explorer, sometimes it's hard to tell the image relationships and sometimes a CHILD is missed when deleting PARENTs, basically invalidating that child and possibly leading to unexpected restoration problems later.
Thanks for the additional information. I have only been using Reflect for about six months and there is so much to learn. It has however already saved my bacon once when it performed a restore perfectly following a System Restore failure that had me in a real panic! I really do appreciate all the help from you guys here at Wilders.
Hi Cache We are all glad to help. Now that you have had success, I would advise practice restoring. Get so it's as comfortable as opening a word document. Then when you need it there won't be that panic. Just confidence. Pete
That sounds like good advice Peter. I was very impressed with the ability to restore from the rescue disc and look forward to practicing from the main GUI in a more relaxed mode!
oh oh I just deleted an old full image off my usb stick and used windows explorer. I only do full backups. "If you create only Full images or Full File and Folder backups then you can safely delete your .mrimg or .mrbak files using Windows Explorer. However, if you create Differential and/or Incremental backup files then we suggest that you use the functionality built into Reflect to avoid breaking backup chains"
"I'm not sure what the "Oh Oh" means... all seems fine if you only do FULL images." was only replying to your post "When you do DELETIONs of any Reflect backup image, it should be done under the Reflect UI, not via Windows Explorer."
ok..lets roll so the Eight GIG jump drive will be just fine on what I am about to do? I open up GUI of Macrium Reflect 5.0 and then do what first?(just want to get it right dudes and I really appreciate everyone's help and wisdom Gordon
Well, Gordo... you've just dropped me off the table for the time being. I've only been a v6 user since its inception... other v5 users will have to help you from here on...
Crap...called my neighbor he has 6.3..will you help then after I do my reverse install and reinstall? I am retired so I have the time..if you have the beer...LOL
If still needed, here are instructions for v5: http://www.macrium.com/help/v5/How_to/Rescue/Create_a_Standard_Windows_PE_Rescue_Environment.htm
