Well I never believe in prophecy, like the end of the world or whatever other prophecy. But if it would comes true, then millions (including me) will change for Apple;)

Though windows update is considered a service, it is not included in 'Windows as a service', according to Microsoft. MS agrees to maintain the OS and provide updates free of charge for the life of the device on which the OS was originally installed (W7/8 systems upgrade to W10 extends that support for that specific device, as per the W10 EULA). To charge a fee for updates would not only require a major policy change announcement, but would also invite a legal challenge. Bait and switch!!!

MS has not articulated what an 'upgrade' will be in the future, as W10 is their last OS. This may be the subscription charge that everyone is anticipating. We can only speculate that major hardware announcements may coincide with new services and therefore require an OS upgrade. The upgrade happens via WU (auto 5GB update), but there will be a charge to have the new features/services enabled. No rodents jumping ship as there will be no charge to those not requesting the new features/services be enabled.

July 30, 2016 will be an interesting day for announcements.

Same here... I don't hate 10 either, I just prefer 7, and I prefer not to use 10. I do have images of all of them though. But 7 is my primary OS...

If the "prophecies" here are to be true, I think Microsoft would still put out Windows 10 for Free; however, this Free Windows 10 would be limited (just like their Starter edition), and then users could subscribe to new features.

@zapjb If that was to happen (which I doubt) it would not apply to those who have already upgraded.

I wonder what their profits actually are like compared to before the Win 8 fiasco?

From what I've seen posted by others, they appear to be doing quite well. They obviously have other markets and revenue streams, so a mild downturn in desktop/laptop business probably doesn't hit them that hard. It's interesting...

I just wonder if they're putting all of their eggs in one basket with Win 10.

    Just the audacity.

And way back when, a lot of you won't remember this. That's why a new paragraph. Boys & girls most corps/companies/organizations used to be staffed with folks who had morals, compassion, honesty, a sense of right & wrong, & generosity. Corporations used to be accountable for mistakes. Now lies are the truth.

Hmmm ... I've never believed corporations ever had morals. That's not new, it's basically the nature and process of business. I can even understand aggressive marketing strategies. Mendacity has always been part of advertising.

At the end of the day, I shouldn't have to worry about updates for my computer trying to sneak things past me like malware. It's bad enough that these updates can often be borkers. Now we have to contend with sneaky backdoor Win 10 upgrading.

It's gone past audacity and is even waving arrogance goodbye in the rear-view mirror.

Yeah, back in the old days, people had a lot more integrity in general. Now, just about anything goes... it's terrible.
