It was also listed by Mister X in the manual install links for April 2017:

Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 KB4015546

    and

Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 KB4015549

    See here

Those are the KB numbers for Win 7 mentioned by itman in reply # 3126

Microsoft has given up on Windows 7. They want you to upgrade to Windows 10 to get your print function back.

    Nuts!

I restarted my PC and I have been staring at:

    "Hi"

    We've updated your PC"

""Getting things ready, please do not turn off your PC"

    FOR OVER AN HOUR !

Thanks for the info. @NormanF and @anon

    Dunno what happened.

I was making a new backup with AcronisTI (Yeah. I know.) Acronis has been doing weird things recently -- it occaisionally adds 50GB of "stuff" to my internal HDD that cannot be identified or found on the HDD (perhaps a VSS issue) -- this vanishes if I update a program. It will also on occaision write a double sized backup to my external HDD (perhaps a bad sector issue forcing Acronis to go into sector by sector mode)

Sooooooooo during this backup I saw that Acronis was doing both - halfway through the backup it was clear that it was making an oversized backup AND had created the 50GB of stuff on my main drive -- so I cancelled it and updated a program to kill the 50GBs. I then did a Restart.

When I restarted I got caught in the "Hi,we have updated your PC" loop. It was not the typical Win Update starting screen -- it looked like the screen you see after a Reset or Refresh. That ran for approx 1 1/2 hours. When it finally "completed" my PC was a mess -- most programs would not open and those that did, such as Word, appeared to have reverted to an older version, my settings and desktop layout had changed, etc. I restarted again and on the 2nd and subsequent tries my PC would not boot into Windows - black screen after boot.

I have restored with A TI to a backup I made last week. On the first start after this recovery my PC did another Windows Update -- Last week's Cumulative Update and all that came with it-- this was likely OK - don't recall if I made the backup before or after that update.

I have no clue what triggered the spontaneous "Windows [Retrograde] Update." that borked my PC other than it occurred on the first restart after I had cancelled an in-progress Acronis TI bloated backup immediately before. (Did you hear the dog bark Watson?)

BUT now I am somewhat concerned because the only Windows Updates listed in my Update History are the ones that were downloded last night after the recovery. Dunno if an Acronis recovery omits listings in Win Update History prior to the date of the recovery.

Is it a fair assumption that if my PC was in fact missing past Windows Updates, as opposed to just their not being visible in Update History, that in checking for updates Windows would fill in the blanks?? Or does the Check for Updates work off of the last update only?
