What is your favorite file manager? Let's face it: you really can't call yourself a technogeek unless you are using one of these. we all know about Windows Explorer and although it is better than previous versions it is still lacking sorely. and there's just something about using a good file managers; it's almost like using another OS. i have paid licenses for too many of these products, it's almost like a fetish for me! the one i like the best is DOpus but XYplorer is so very close behind! and btw, there is a 51% discount on lifetimes license coming soon to Bitsdujour for XYplorer. you gotta take advantage of this. the best free one i have tried is Q-Dir, imo. anyway, tell us how much love you have for file managers!
first, the Recent list does not seem to get updated, if you right click on the Taskbar icon. trying to get the file /folder size pop-up to appear by leaving your mouse cursor on the first item in a folder is painful. you got to select another item, then come back to the first. there are still no dual pane or multi-tabs functions. you can always open 2 Explorer side by side but this is the 21st Century for crying out loud. even Linux/Unix OSes have better default file managers. there is a whole bunch of stuff i won't go into that makes using a good file manager a time saver. not to mention being a more enjoyable experience. and time is one commodity that's hard to come by...
Tabbed explorer is the only thing I want added. I don't care about any other issues since they don't really effect me.
does Windows Explorer look as nice as this?: -http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/847/unledpxq.jpg/- i like my 'creature comfort'.
Much... much nicer... Just my opinion of course. That looks like a super-cluttered version of XP's explorer. I'd hate to have to look at that.
Same here. I only miss a tabbed Windows Explorer. Besides that, I like it clean and neat as it is. It's one of those things that it's all about taste.
Win8's is very nice. The minimized ribbon still adds functionality and it's very "clean" looking. Perfect for my needs. Like I said, a tabbed explorer is the only thing I want added.
of almost 5 years FreeCommander...earlier few years WinCommander...and I can't imagine my work with computer without it. FC just has all I need.
I vote qdir. Pros: Lots of shortcut options to speed up browsing. Up to 4 panes, with tabs on each pane if desired. Treeviews per pane or one for all. Custom color schemes. Shortcuts that can start qdir in different "modes". Many useful small features (like hotlinks) that save much time. Integration of the mouse into navigation other than traditional use. Small and fast. Cons: When copy/pasting, becomes unresponsive until copy is finished. When caculating file/dir sizes, can be slow. Preview only partially works like windows explorer. Sometimes too many options is confusing. As far as windows explorer: In XP, it is all I used. In win7, I loathe it unless I tweak things heavily. Seems couter-productive to me, requiring many more mouse actions to get the job done than XP required. To me that is backwards. This is purely a personal preference thing. Someone like myself who uses a file manager whenever they do anything on the computer has different tastes than someone who uses it sparingly. Sul.
PowerDesk Been using it since Version 1 (still have the floppy and manual) They are now at Version 8. I've had them all.
Directory Opus looks good but it is too much for me. They have lost of features which isn't not important to me. Windows explorer is enough. And i used to like using nautilus when i had Ubuntu.
Explorer is fine for most tasks and most people. if you don't feel the need for something else then all is good. but it's not tweakable enough for me, not enough options.
Total Commander, embedded in the Total Commander Ultima Prime package....this 1 has a lot of plugins and programs pre-installed,and you can copy the folder to an usbstick and run it as portable version.....
