It is not a malware scanner. It is intended to make it easier for the user to know what is going on with their system. It monitors common startup locations, and alerts you to any changed, the HOST file, filetype changes, running processes, activeX, hidden files, and IE helpers.

The plus version allows for real-time monotoring access to the WP application database.

In a manner of speaking, yes. WinPatrol will alert the user to any suspicious activity in terms of the list I mentioned above. It will not fuction without user intervention, as is not typical with most HIPS. It does have its shortcoming; such as nor being able to alert the user to startup services. I suggest you try the free USB version first and see if you like it. I have posted a copy of it at my site (here)

What do you mean? I've always been alerted for services when a program installs one.

Hi, why would it be useful to use the polling (?) option in the above screen shot as opposed to realtime?

Polling is avaliable in the free version, while realtime is avaliable in the paid version.

Yes, but the user is not alerted when a service adds itself to system startup. That is not in WP's capabilities. For instance, LnS can run at startup. I am alerted whenever I selected the option to have it do so. It also has the option to run as a service at startup. If I select that I am not prompted. I believe the free version of Anvir does monitor this. Check it out to see the difference. You will see that WP lists no services on their "startup programs" tab because a services in not techically a program. Therein is a major flaw, I believe, in WP.

Although Winpatrol has some protection capability that's not it's strength. What makes it a "must have" program is the way it makes information from many different areas accessible from one interface. For instance you can view and manage startup items, BHO's (browser helper objects such as toolbars), activeX controls, active processes and services. It also has a "delayed startup" option which gives you control over the order and timing of startup items.

No. WP is not intended to be a malware scanner nor a malware blocker. It simply alerts the user to various changes in their system, which might be the effects of malware.

There is no demo of the plus version. But you can download WinPatrol from their site (here). You will not have access to the Plus features unless you pay for them, which include real-time monitoring and access to the database. See the comparison matrix here.

My recommendation would be to check out Anvir. I like them better than WP. Bus, as this is a thread about WinPatrol, I will leave it at that. Please PM me is you gave any questions.

I found a mysterious .dll file in my Hidden Files.
Wasn't terribly concerned about it, but was curious as to what it was.
20 minutes of Googling yielded useless info.
WinPatrol's "Plus Info" immediately gave me the program it was associated with, creation date, the developer's name, and the .dll's function.
    Quite impressive.

That it is. Althought that's the goal, right; to have access to all kinds of information at your fingertips?

Real-Time protection should yield less of an impact on your system (than the already minimal impact of WinPatrol's polling).

Detection of spyware / adware / mysteryware is Winpatrol's forte.
Efficacy of it's "Real-time Infiltration Detection" was tested here: http://www.winpatrol.com/rid.html
Note: link is report by Winpatrol's developer.
