Re: US and UK struck NSA secret deal

It's all politics, they have to appear to be 'outraged', even though a huge proportion of the electorate can see through them & their duplicity & dissembling. Besides, international & domestic terrorism are not imaginary threats. The security services both sides of the Atlantic know full well that they need to cooperate to be effective.

Smiley would probably claim that: "Everything's completely normal at the circus." :D

Since politics is verboten, I won't comment on Hayden's spin control mission.

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." Lord Acton.

The Tech giants are powerful business entities, but 'the bad men' have absolute power. Their greatness is defined by their never ending conquests. Information is a very lucrative bounty in this day and age and it is easy plunder. Our privacy and personal treasures will never be secure in the presence of Absolute Rule.

Is all this NSA snooping doing any good? Who have they caught?
All terrorists have to do is use Internet cafes with fresh devices, same with cell phones - a new one a day keeps NSA away.
It all looks like a giant boondoggle.

    hi,

Dark shadows and subliminal advertisement of the NSA in NCIS

    http://introverthitsthestreets.blogspot.fr/2013/11/the-nsa-according-to-ncis-just-few-bad.html

Like the blogger of the first link, i used to watch NCIS for the first seasons, not anymore since years: things are not always here as white, there as good, here as good and there as bad...but often grey.
    NSA, good goals, bad actions...

FreddyFreeloader, I think that is the biggest question. I'm not so certain that these programs are having any profound effect in law enforcement and the security of the nation. Perhaps in time it will lessen the security, as this distrust and anger towards the government can only eventually backfire.

Kareldjag, that can be said of most controversial agencies. They have a purpose and are needed. But paranoia and power don't mix well.

Microsoft, suspecting NSA spying, to ramp up efforts to encrypt its Internet traffic
    Washington Post

Microsoft is moving toward a major new effort to encrypt its Internet traffic amid fears that the National Security Agency may have broken into its global *communications links, said people familiar with the emerging plans.

Suspicions at Microsoft, while building for several months, sharpened in October when it was reported that the NSA was intercepting traffic inside the private networks of Google and Yahoo, two industry rivals with similar global infrastructures, said people with direct knowledge of the company’s deliberations. They said top Microsoft executives are meeting this week to decide what encryption initiatives to deploy and how quickly.

    Hmmm.

Funny how deep light of day can travel to reach the darkest remote regions of the underground.

No one actively trying to commit violence. They have finally admitted that they ONLY stopped ONE guy from sending some money to Somalia, to defend against an Ethiopian invasion. Isn't that swell?
