@tlu Thanks for the information. It's a bit more clear for me and it's a killer combo. @Windows_Security For me it's the cosmetic filtering that makes some webpages look better. Example: http://www.gratissoftwaresite.nl/ with uMatrix big yellow squares. with uBlock and uMatrix uBlock hides them. Now an example website with a lot of external sites frames scripts linked: the dutch house hunters site funda.nl When you select a house http://www.funda.nl/koop/leiderdorp/huis-48355954-herenhof-13/ you can see a video (webtvframework.com), a map (plattegrond) (floorplanner.com), see your mortgage (maandlasten) (hypotheker.nl), a map of the area (kaart & buurt) (maps.googleapis.com). I have to create a lot of rules in umatrix just for 1 site or is there an easier way to enable all that content?
Kees, yes, uMatrix blocks a lot (and 0.9.0.0 is even better as it can collapse blocked elements) but there are still elements which can't be blocked by it: First example Second example (related to hosts files but also applicable to uMatrix) Furthermore, uMatrix doesn't do cosmetic filtering (aka element hiding), uBlock does.
Well, you could simply whitelist the "all" cell - and that site works with one single click. As a general note, it's not necessary to whitelist one cell after the other: You can whitelist complete columns (by clicking the column header) and/or complete (sub-)domains (by clicking the respective cell in the left column) - or, as mentioned, even everything by clicking the "all" cell. This does not apply to explicitly blacklisted elements - thus, trackers, adservers, malware sites contained in the uMatrix hosts files are still blocked. Furthermore, you can also allow specific sites like youtube in the global scope so that embedded youtube videos are automatically allowed in the domain-specific and site-specific scopes. This makes things easier very often. See also the useful rulesets wiki site. (Please read also the rules syntax site.)
I think with your help and with the help of @tlu I will get it to work. For my familymembers and relatives (to keep it simple) I install Adguard on Google Chrome. For myself I really like the combo uBlock (0.9.7.0) uMatrix (0.9.01).
Great. good it worked out for you. Thomas (Tlu) helps Raymond (Gorhill), so he is the best person to take advice from. Mind you that some sites with very old-school cookie/script usage won't show video's with Adguard either. Have a look with uMatrix logger at news site nu.nl for example and be amazed about this tracker frenzy fest.
If i may i would like to just to outline a cosmetic problem i have discovered concerning ublock origin and certain themes in firefox. For example if we install say the walnut2 or lavafox themes then it seems to block out half of the ublock console. Is any other firefox users experiencing this.?
I've been playing with umatrix and ublock for about an hour now and they do use less resource over my current setup... if i understand it correctly umatrix is: secret agent + Noscript + a little bit of abp and ublock0 is: abp + noscript with less features?? my other concern about migrating to this setup is the development... I've seen threads about ublock being abandon my the main dev?? and would Umatrix and Ublock surpass or atleast be as effective as my current setup: secret agent + Noscript (stick rules)+ abp (lots of filter) + https everywhere...
re: uMatrix: 1) Is there a setting to revert 'temporary' automatically by simply closing tab..window... Or, do I have to manually revert for temporary. Seems temporary should be temporary. Will 'temporary' always revert end of session. 2) Why is Auto-update Hosts not checked by default. How often do I manually update Hosts and do I Purge or Update will Purge. 3) What's XHR 4) Does Matrix delineate IFrame v Frame. re: uBlocko: 1) Is there a way to have 'Toggle' revert to default by simply closing tab..window... If I forget to 'Toggle' back. Toggle state remains. 2) Do 'Disconnect' lists overlap default. Is that why Disconnect is not default..?
@bjm, for 1) it's temporary until either the browser is closed or until it's manually removed for 3) XHR is requests made by scripts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XMLHttpRequest sorry, not sure about other questions.
@wat0114 Thanks for confirming temporary rules. XHR is over my pay grade. As Matrix lists XHR separate. I'll need to study. Thanks
You're welcome. that makes two of us I suppose the main important part about it that I can extrapolate from the document is:
But that Wikipedia article also says: I must admit that I don't understand the implications of CORS yet. I have to do some more research ...
Geez, go easy summerheat. I'm used to NoScript and ABP in Firefox. Just dumped ScriptBlock and HTTP Switchboard in Chrome. Chrome running great. I'll have to digest slowly. So far. uBlockO and uMatrix as out of the box. (My rules for a few familiar sites) Cheers
Okay. But, if I want to view page. Do I simply Off uMatrix as I have no filter to temp or save. Does Host protection indicate unsafe site...? Site I should avoid. Do I need to update Hosts... Do I need to Purge. How do I know Hosts info is current...? Hosts auto update is not checked by default. When do I update. How often. Do I purge. Hosts lists (all) reporting outdated. Should I check auto update...? Manual Update tell me to Purge all caches. Upon Purge I'm told outdated again...? Sorry, I'm missing the obvious.
You can whitelist also hosts file blacklisted domain. If they are too many in some cases to conviently whitelist them you can disable matrix filtering for such particular site (scope). I'd rather would like for such cases an option to disable hosts files for such site, but such option is not existing. The reason why I want that kind of an option are too much to explain to a newbie like you.
How do I whitelist...? All hostnames in a hosts file are loaded as blacklisted hostnames in the global scope. Newbie to uMatrix n' uBlockO I'm used to NoScript and ABP You were newbie once.... Why are Hosts not auto updated by default. Why Purge all caches. I'll consult Documentation.
my.leadpages.net is shown red. Click that red cell to make it green. Or whatever domains that are shown blacklisted (= red). Dark red always means it is a hosts files blacklisted domain/site.
