Following news today that Facebook intends to more tightly integrate Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Congressman Ro Khanna (D-California) says the government was asleep at the switch when it failed to stop Facebook’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram in 2012. The Congressman believes the merger constituted antitrust back then, as it does now.

Facebook has been warned it can only borg its three messaging platforms in the European Union if it meets data protection rules. There are widespread concerns about the plan's impact.
In a statement, the Irish watchdog (Facebook's European HQ is in Dublin) said it understood the plan was at a "very early conceptual stage" but that it would keep close tabs on the process.

"The Irish DPC will be very closely scrutinising Facebook's plans as they develop, particularly insofar as they involve the sharing and merging of personal data between different Facebook companies," it said.

WhatsApp adds biometric feature to help protect messages

WhatsApp is adding new privacy features for many of its users, as the security community keeps a close eye on how its parent company, Facebook, plans to merge the globally popular messaging app with other products.

In a software update, WhatsApp allows iOS users to lock their messages with biometric authentication tools. The update, version 2.19.20, allows iPhone owners to unlock WhatsApp using Face ID or Touch ID. This layer of security applies to the entire app — rather than on a chat-by-chat basis — and can be enabled through iPhone’s settings page.

Earlier this year, Facebook announced plans to merge the messaging infrastructure across Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which would make it possible for users to communicate across the different platforms. It looks like those plans might be stopped in their tracks, though, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal (via Reuters).

According to the report, the United States Federal Trade Commission is considering an injunction against Facebook due to concerns over how the company's policies on how its apps interact might violate antitrust law. The injunction could stop Facebook from enforcing policies on how its apps interact with rivals or integrate with each other.
Specifically, Facebook could be prevented from merging the messaging infrastructure. The injunction could be filed as early next month, per the report.

Early last year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was reported to be setting his sights on the integration of Messenger, Instagram Direct, and WhatsApp into a single messaging platform. The planned unification is supposed to allow cross-messaging among these services, with support for end-to-end encryption.

Now, a new report from The Verge indicates the social networking site has begun merging Instagram and Messenger at least in what could be a sign of a more serious effort toward combining those three separate messaging services eventually.
This has been spotted on iOS and Android in the U.S., and if you open the Instagram app on any of these operating systems, you might see a screen that informs you of a "new way to message on Instagram"
