In recent days, thanks in part to the social-distancing measures made necessary by the coronavirus outbreak, converts to the work-from-home life are being forced to contend with the widely used videoconferencing service Zoom. There's just one problem: It's not exactly privacy-friendly.

Long the bane of remote workers, Zoom is equipped with numerous settings that even many of its longtime users may not know about. Take, for example, the "attendee attention tracking" feature. According to Zoom, if enabled, this feature allows hosts of conference calls — i.e. your boss — to monitor participants' computers.

"Hosts can see an indicator in the participant panel of a meeting or webinar if an attendee does not have Zoom Desktop Client or Mobile App in focus for more than 30 seconds," explains the company. "'In focus' means the user has the Zoom meeting view is open and active."
Zoom also offers paid subscribers the ability to record meetings to the cloud. A recorded meeting, as you might imagine, comes with added privacy risks.

What's more — and this may seem obvious, but it's worth mentioning — recorded meetings also store typed chat messages and allow the meeting host to "Receive a TXT file with the transcript of in-meeting chat messages."

And then there's the issue of what Zoom does with your personal data. Zoom's privacy page addresses some questions a potential user might have. Alas, its answers are not exactly reassuring.

"Does Zoom sell Personal Data?" asks one subhead. "Depends what you mean by 'sell,'" is literally the next sentence. Gulp.
In other words, even if you can make the argument that Zoom isn't selling customers' personal data — an argument which, to be clear, Zoom is making — the company still admits it shares some of your data with third parties and that privacy sticklers might argue that such activity counts as selling.

One of less sinister ways people could be surveilled without realizing it is in their own homes, on Zoom, with the application's attention-tracking features.

According to the company's website, when the feature is turned on, meeting hosts can tell if participants have navigated away from the active Zoom window for more than 30 seconds.
Teens attending school lectures from home were the first to start swerving this feature: videos on TikTok show them setting up camera stands in front of their laptops with images of themselves sitting at their desks: [...]

On Twitter, people are finding ways to use the Zoom Rooms custom background feature to slap an image of themselves in their frames.
Zoom says it isn't using any kind of video or audio analysis to track attention, so this is mostly for your human coworkers and boss' sake.

Popular iOS app Zoom, which has been thrust into prominence due to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown restrictions, sends data to Facebook even if users don't have a Facebook account.
According to Vice:

As people work and socialize from home, video conferencing software Zoom has exploded in popularity. What the company and its privacy policy don't make clear is that the iOS version of the Zoom app is sending some analytics data to Facebook, even if Zoom users don't have a Facebook account, according to a Motherboard analysis of the app.

This sort of data transfer is not uncommon, especially for Facebook; [...] But Zoom users may not be aware it is happening, nor understand that when they use one product, they may be providing data to another service altogether.

Yesterday, it was discovered that the Zoom iOS app was sharing personal data with Facebook without user consent.
Even worse, the company was sharing user analytics data to the Facebook Graph API even if that user did not have a Facebook account.

Zoom immediately faced a wave of backlash for its lack of transparency. Today, it appears that the company has responded to the situation by removing the "Login with Facebook" feature from its iOS app. In a statement to Motherboard the company says that, while the SDK did collect some data, it was not "personal".

"The data collected by the Facebook SDK did not include any personal user information, but rather included data about users' devices such as the mobile OS type and version, the device time zone, device OS, device model and carrier, screen size, processor cores, and disk space."
The company says that the data collection was not intended, but an oversight in its desire to make logging into its app convenient for its users.

At Laura Purcell's lake community in Rockaway, N.J., a group of 25 moms craved some connection at the end of a long week of coronavirus restrictions. So the mother of 8-year-old triplets arranged a virtual happy hour using Zoom, the teleconferencing service.
What Purcell and her pals didn't think about were the kind of data-privacy concerns that might come up when people use other online platforms such as Facebook or Google.

But just like those other web services, Zoom collects personal information about its users and doesn't provide a lot of detail about how it's used for advertising, marketing, or other business purposes. And most of the people on Zoom calls probably don’t realize how much information a host can gather.

What Zoom Knows About You
Zoom's privacy policy is similar to many digital platforms', claiming the right to collect and store personal data, and share it with third parties such as advertisers.
In Zoom's case, that extends to what the company calls customer content, or "the content contained in cloud recordings, and instant messages, files, whiteboards ... shared while using the service."

Videos aren't off-limits, according to the document, and neither are transcripts that can be generated automatically, the documents you share on your screen, or the names of everyone on a call.

"Zoom isn't necessarily doing anything users would object to" with the data, says Bill Fitzgerald, a Consumer Reports privacy researcher who analyzed the company's policies.
"But their terms of use give them a whole lot of leeway to collect information and share it, both now and in the future."

What Your Host Knows About You
A Zoom host can be someone you know and trust, like the friend who organized Purcell's get together, as well as your employer, a client, a school official, or a relative stranger from a social gathering.

"Zoom puts a lot of power in the hands of the meeting hosts," says Brookman. The host has more power to record and monitor the call than you might realize if you're just a participant, especially if he or she has a corporate account.

"If you're teleworking on a home computer, your boss shouldn't be able to monitor what's on your screen. Zoom should get rid of attention tracking mode, or at the very least make participants aware when it's on,” Brookman says.

Zoom: Seems like everyone's using Zoom these days. One thing to be aware of, though, with respect to the free Zoom service: as Consumer Reports points out, their terms of service allow them to use a lot of the information you transmit, particularly if you use the free or low-cost service. (As always, if a service is free, the service isn't the product, you/your information is).

That doesn't mean they are doing so, just that they could use an attendee list, or even a video, powerpoint or document transmitted on the service to do targeted marketing, or potentially to sell to third parties. Zoom hasn't responded to Consumer Reports, though.

And make sure you get a BAA if (i) you are a covered entity under HIPAA and (ii) any of the information that the service comes into contact with might be PHI.

UPDATE: one other thing: be the host, if you are the CE. The host gets to keep data too; that's not a terrible idea, and if the host was in the meeting the host had access to that information, at least at the time of the meeting, so having it later isn't a whole new thing.

But it's like recording a call: don't be surprised later that the meeting host has what amounts to perfect memory. And if you are the host, be aware of where the recording is stored and transmitted, and how it's used; if it's a telehealth visit, it's PHI, so it should be stored like any other medical record (encrypted at rest and in transit, hopefully).

With millions of people around the world working from home in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus, business is booming for Zoom, bringing more attention on the company and its privacy practices, including a policy, later updated, that seemed to give the company permission to mine messages and files shared during meetings for the purpose of ad targeting.

Still, Zoom offers reliability, ease of use, and at least one very important security assurance: As long as you make sure everyone in a Zoom meeting connects using “computer audio” instead of calling in on a phone, the meeting is secured with end-to-end encryption, at least according to Zoom’s website, its security white paper, and the user interface within the app.

When a host starts a meeting with the “Require Encryption for 3rd Party Endpoints” setting enabled, participants see a green padlock that says, “Zoom is using an end to end encrypted connection” when they mouse over it.
But when reached for comment about whether video meetings are actually end-to-end encrypted, a Zoom spokesperson wrote,

“Currently, it is not possible to enable E2E encryption for Zoom video meetings. Zoom video meetings use a combination of TCP and UDP. TCP connections are made using TLS and UDP connections are encrypted with AES using a key negotiated over a TLS connection.”
The encryption that Zoom uses to protect meetings is TLS, the same technology that web servers use to secure HTTPS websites.

Zoom is apparently leaking some email addresses, user photos, and allowing some users to initiate a video call with strangers because of an issue with how the app handles contacts that it perceives work for the same organization, according to a report by Vice.

Typically, Zoom will group contacts with the same email domain into a “Company Directory” so you can, for example, search for a specific person, see their photo and email, and start a video call with that person. That makes sense for a company with employees on Zoom, but the app has also been grouping some people together who signed up for the service with a personal email, reports Vice.
It’s unclear how widespread this issue is or how many domains may be affected.

An affected user shared a screenshot with Vice showing 995 accounts in his Company Directory. This user also said he ran into the issue with the domains xs4all.nl, dds.nl, and quicknet.nl, which are all email domains from Dutch ISPs. Zoom said it blacklisted those domains after Vice brought them to the company’s attention.

And Motherboard reports that Zoom is leaking the email addresses of “at least a few thousand” people because personal addresses are treated as if they belong to the same company.

Zoom was quietly sending data to Facebook about a user’s Zoom habits — even when the user does not have a Facebook account.

Zoom came under fire again for its “attendee tracking” feature, which, when enabled, lets a host check if participants are clicking away from the main Zoom window during a call.

On the bright side and to some users’ relief, we reported that it is in fact possible to join a Zoom video call without having to download or use the app.

Zoom has faced questions over its lack of transparency on law enforcement requests it receives. Access Now, a privacy and rights group, called on Zoom to release the number of requests it receives, just as Amazon, Google, Microsoft and many more tech giants report on a semi-annual basis.

In fairness, Zoom is not inherently bad and there are many reasons why Zoom is so popular. It’s easy to use, reliable and for the vast majority it’s incredibly convenient.
But Zoom’s misleading claims give users a false sense of security and privacy. Whether it’s hosting a virtual happy hour or a yoga class, or using Zoom for therapy or government cabinet meetings, everyone deserves privacy.

N.Y. Attorney General raises concerns about Zoom’s handling of sensitive data

Earlier today, New York’s attorney general, Letitia James issued a letter to Zoom asking that the company become more transparent about its handling of sensitive and privacy-related data on its surging platform.
Specifically, James is asking that Zoom explain what, if any, measures are being into place to address user privacy while a rising tide of demand continues to see loads of sensitive data being transmitted through the platform.

Despite updating its privacy policy on Sunday, March 30, 2020, the AG still released its letter of concern that the company’s app “may be circumventing state requirements protecting student data,” according to reporting from the New York Times. Specifically, the AG seems to be worried that the Zoom platform is essentially offloading consent requirements to educators choosing to use the platform.
Zoom has already responded to New York’s AG with the following statement, “We appreciate the New York attorney general’s engagement on these issues and are happy to provide her with the requested information.”

However, the New York AG’s concerns come at a relatively early time for the platform and could seemingly put a ceiling on the conferencing software’s growth as stricter privacy implementations inevitably lead to the end of two-way data sharing and forces companies to find new forms of revenue growth that usually result in pricing changes for consumers.

Zoom admits some calls were routed through China by mistake

Hours after security researchers at Citizen Lab reported that some Zoom calls were routed through China, the video conferencing platform has offered an apology and a partial explanation.

The latest findings landed earlier today when Citizen Lab researchers said that some calls made in North America were routed through China — as were the encryption keys used to secure those calls. But as was noted this week, Zoom isn’t end-to-end encrypted at all, despite the company’s earlier claims [...]
The same can’t be said for Chinese authorities, however, which could demand Zoom turn over any encryption keys on its servers in China to facilitate decryption of the contents of encrypted calls.

After many schools adopted Zoom to conduct online lessons during the coronavirus lockdown, concerns about security and privacy have led to a ban on the video conferencing software across the US.

The chancellor of New York City's Department of Education Richard A Carranza sent an email to school principals telling them to "cease using Zoom as soon as possible". And he is not alone; schools in other parts of the country have taken similar action, and educators are now being trained to use Microsoft Teams as this has been suggested as a suitable alternative, partly because it is compliant with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

Documents seen by Chalkbeat show that principals in NYC have been told: "Based on the DOE's review of those documented concerns, the DOE will no longer permit the use of Zoom at this time".

In response to the recent barrage of security and privacy concerns about the video-conferencing software, Taiwan today banned all official use of the software.
In a statement (link in Chinese), Taiwan’s executive branch said it had informed all government agencies to cease the use of “products with information security concerns, such as Zoom.” Instead, it recommended that officials use conferencing software provided by other companies, such as Google and Microsoft.

It is one of the first governments to completely bar the use of Zoom, following similar bans by SpaceX and NASA, and the New York City department of education. Australia today also enacted a ban (paywall) on parliamentarians and senators using the service, following a similar move by the Australian Defence Force.

Shareholder Michael Drieu claimed in a court filing that a string of recent media reports highlighting the privacy flaws in Zoom’s application have led to the company’s stock, which had rallied for several days in the beginning of the year, to plummet.
