YouTube is officially bringing all of its original series and specials — available for free, with ads — starting this year.
It’s shift in strategy for YouTube, which has previously made premium content available only to subscribers of YouTube Premium, which costs $11.99 monthly in the U.S. In some cases, however, YouTube will selectively window shows on the free, ad-supported side of the platform.

Earlier this year, YouTube promised to make its original shows -- exclusive to paying Premium members at the moment -- available to the public as ad-supported programming.
Now, the Google subsidiary is staying true to its word and making all original series, movies and live events released on September 24th and beyond accessible to non-paying members.

Premium subscribers will still enjoy the better viewing experience, of course.
Non-paying members will have to wait for each episode in a series to be released to the public. Still, that's not a bad compromise for those who don't want to pay $12 a month to watch the platform's original programs.

According to a report yesterday from Deadline, the YouTube premium series Cobra Kai will be moving to a different streaming service for its third season. The show, which is produced and distributed by Sony Pictures TV and based on a continuation of the Karate Kid, may end up on a rival streaming service like Netflix or Hulu.

Deadline says that producers hope that the move may allow the show to last beyond three seasons. YouTube was reportedly only willing to have a single, final, third season, and uninterested in commissioning a fourth — understandable given YouTube's waning interest in scripted content.

Negotiations are reportedly ongoing, but if you had hoped to watch the third (and previously final) season via YouTube for free, you might end up being out of luck.

YouTube hit original Cobra Kai is moving to Netflix

Netflix has acquired the streaming rights to smash hit Cobra Kai from YouTube and will host the first two seasons of the series on its platform later this year.

Cobra Kai is the continuation of The Karate Kid trilogy of films from the 1980s. It picks up nearly 35 years after the events in the first movie and stars much of the original cast including Ralph Macchio and William Zabka and Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, respectively.
The first episode of season one has amassed nearly 87 million views since its May 2018 premiere on YouTube.
