A hot potato: Having a verified badge is a big deal for creators and goes a long way in validating their channel in the eyes of both subscribers and sponsors. Removing a badge from a valid channel could seriously impact that creator’s ability to earn a living, but then again, YouTube is no stranger to making controversial decisions that affect monetization.

Google is changing the way it verifies channels on YouTube to prioritize those that “have a clear need for proof of authenticity.”
Currently, a channel on the video sharing platform is eligible for verification if it has more than 100,000 subscribers – a method that worked well when YouTube was smaller but not so much as the site has grown in popularity.

A YouTube representative told The Verge that channels who no longer meet the criteria for verification and may have their badge removed will be notified today and that they will have the option to appeal the decision before the changes start rolling out in late October.

Verification badges on YouTube are more than just a checkmark to creators. Those tiny marks are a sign that after years of building a channel, they’re seen as a valuable member of the community.

Numerous creators with verified checkmarks spoke to The Verge about feeling demoralized after receiving the email. Many creators also said this was just another example of YouTube seemingly turning its back on endemic creators who helped build the site into what it is today.

Having a verification badge isn’t just a cosmetic advantage for creators. There are some practical advantages, too, including search benefits and being able to leave a comment as a verified creator.
The company knew that removing verification statuses would upset creators, but YouTube felt it was a necessary step to battle impersonations of top accounts.

YouTube backtracks on taking badges away from creators after outcry

YouTube is almost completely backtracking on the verification system changes it announced yesterday. All YouTubers who are currently verified will get to keep their verification status, and YouTubers who are not yet verified will still be able to apply for it once they hit 100,000 subscribers, as creators have in the past.
Only a single key change isn’t being reversed: YouTube will actually verify that channels are authentic, whereas in the past it seemingly has not thoroughly taken this very obvious step.

This is all quite different from the original plan. YouTube had indicated it was going to limit verification to only established brands and the biggest personalities — people who were at high risk of impersonation.
There was considerable backlash from the community after the announcement was made.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki apologized earlier today after seeing the feedback. “I’m sorry for the frustration & hurt that we caused with our new approach to verification,” she wrote on Twitter. “While trying to make improvements, we missed the mark.”

More recently, Twitter said it had “paused” the program so it could work out some of these issues, and then continued to secretly verify thousands of accounts anyway.
For all its problems, though, Twitter’s double-secret verification program still looks superior to the clunker that YouTube rolled out on Thursday.

The core problem with YouTube’s new approach to checkmarks, as I saw it, was that mass unverifying people would seem to *reduce* trust in the program rather than enhance it. If a badge can be taken away at any time, for any reason, what did it really mean in the first place?
For a creator community that already struggles with the daily specter of copyright strikes and the seemingly random demonetization of their videos, the loss of the checkmark promised to be a heavy blow.

The most important change YouTube made in response to criticism is that it no longer plans to mass-unverify creators or force them to file appeals to keep their checkmarks.

In each platform’s verification mess you can see what it truly fears: for Twitter and YouTube, it’s the user base; and for Facebook, it’s competition.
In any case, the goal of verifying users remains a noble one. When administered properly, these programs make us feel more confident about the authenticity of our news and video feeds.
