Google has introduced a number of anti-piracy products and measures over the years, and in its latest report, the tech giant has revealed how some those products have been faring.

In the paper entitled "How Google Fights Piracy" for 2018, Mountain View said YouTube has already paid $3 billion to copyright owners through Content ID. That's the video platform's system, which scans uploads against a database of files submitted by content owners and creators.

The tech giant said it invested $100 million into Content ID's development and support. It's part of the company's efforts to ensure customers have legitimate access to content, which doesn't only help drive revenue for creatives, but also helps combat piracy.

Oh really? In reality they are paying copyright scammer instead of the owners. Because they don't check whether or not copyright claims are made by the owner and they don't go after those who make fraudulent claims. So now there's a new industry.

YouTube is making good on its promise to defend its creators from copyright trolls, specifically third parties that claim monetization on users’ videos over seconds of content.
On Thursday, YouTube announced a new policy change that will stop copyright holders from manually claiming monetization of a creator’s entire video over short song clips and unintentional audio.

It should be noted that copyright holders can still file a claim that blocks creators from monetizing their videos or file a takedown of the video completely. The policy simply makes sure that the claimant can no longer make money off creators’ hard work because of this tiny copyright infractions.
YouTube also clarified that the policy change only covers copyright holders that manually claim videos. Companies using the site’s automatic Content ID match system will not be affected.

A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday asked the chief executive of Alphabet’s Google to expand its use of technology that prevents copyright infringement to smaller creators who are “at a significant disadvantage.”

Copyright holders with “smaller catalogs of works” are disadvantaged without Google’s “Content ID” technology, having to manually track down copyright infringements or allow their intellectual property to be used, the group of U.S. senators and representatives said in their letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
The lawmakers asked Pichai if the company plans to provide access to its “Content ID” technology to more creators on its YouTube video platform and asked Google to send representatives to answer questions before a congressional panel.

Creators who own “a substantial body of original material that is frequently uploaded” to YouTube are eligible to use the technology, according to YouTube’s website.
The lawmakers also asked Pichai how Google determines which creators qualify as those with a “substantial body” of material and if Content ID is used on Google’s other platforms such as Google Photos and Google Drive.
