YouTube CEO says EU’s new copyright legislation threatens jobs, smaller creators

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki published her quarterly letter to creators today, which included very strong language regarding the EU’s controversial copyright reform directive. Specifically, her letter focused on Article 13, the so-called “meme ban” that states that any site with a large amount of user-generated content – like Facebook or YouTube, for example – will be responsible for taking down content that infringes on copyright. Wojcicki says the way this legislation is written could “shut down the ability” of millions of people to upload to YouTube.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has once again decried the European Union’s proposed copyright directive, arguing in a new blog post that it’s impossible for a platform like YouTube to comply with the suggested regulations.

This marks the first time the CEO has vehemently stated that YouTube does not have the technical or financial capabilities to enforce the kind of copyright restriction the European Union is seeking.

“EU residents are at risk of being cut off from videos that, in just the last month, they viewed more than 90 billion times,” Wojcicki wrote. “Those videos come from around the world, including more than 35 million EU channels, and they include language classes and science tutorials as well as music videos.”

Although the EU’s copyright directive will affect creators and their ability to use copyrighted content — even under the Fair Use Act — YouTube’s primary concern seems to be the financial burden associated with complying.

EU Countries Endorse Copyright Reform

A controversial European Union bill regarding the reform of copyright laws has been officially approved despite fierce opposition from tech firms, meme creators, and privacy campaigners.

A majority of EU officials agreed to the copyright law reform, but according to Reuters Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Poland refused to back the deal – and two other EU countries abstained.
