Earlier this year, at its Build developers conference, Microsoft announced that it was working on a web-based version of its Visual Studio IDE. At the time, Visual Studio Online went into a private preview, open to a select number of developers. Now, at its Ignite conference, the company has opened the service to all developers who want to give it a spin.

With Visual Studio Online, developers will be able to quickly spin up a fully configured development environment for their repositories. From there, they can use the web-based editor to work on their code.

“Visual Studio Online brings together Visual Studio, cloud-hosted developer environments and a web-based editor that’s accessible from anywhere to help developers be more productive than ever,” Microsoft notes in its press materials.
In its current form, the service is deeply integrated with Microsoft’s GitHub (no surprise there), but the company notes that developers can also attach their own physical and virtual machines to their Visual Studio-based environments.

Microsoft is continuing to refresh, refine, and update its products at a rapid pace. Today, Microsoft announced that Visual Studio Online would now be known as Visual Studio Codespaces, and the company will also be dropping the price of the service by up to 50% along with new options to run Codespaces inside lower-performing virtual machines.

The new rebranding is set to begin in the next few weeks and will include a new tagline saying that “Codespaces are simply the most productive place to code.” According to Microsoft’s blog, many developers and users of Visual Studio Online indicated that the service was much more than simply an editor in the browser, and the changes announced today were a direct result of that feedback.

“One of the most consistent things we’ve heard is that the ability to create cloud-hosted dev environments is having a positive impact in more ways than we had thought,” the company said today

Microsoft is killing Visual Studio Codespaces

At Build 2019, Microsoft first announced Visual Studio Online, a web-based companion to Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code that allows developers to work on and edit code from any device with latest web browsers.

In April this year, Microsoft rebranded Visual Studio Online to Visual Studio Codespaces. Visual Studio Codespaces supported Git repos, extensions, and a built-in command line interface allowing developers to edit, run, and debug applications from any device.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that Visual Studio Codespaces will be killed and the features will be consolidated into GitHub Codespaces. Existing Visual Studio Codespaces users can transition to GitHub Codespaces now and the current Azure offering will be retired in February 2021.

LOL, good one. I'm also not really into all of this cloud based stuff. On the other hand I have been using webmail for the last 20 years, but that's more than enough for me.
