I install it on anyone's computer that is not all that computer savvy. For example, I've installed it on my 75+ year old mother's computer. She's click happy and will click on anything. While it's certainly not perfect, it will keep some people from clicking on some inappropriate or shady links. It has a purpose.
I voted "Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't." One reason I voted this way is because there have been numerous times when I've checked a website's reputation at WOT, & although, it may be rated "green", there are no reviews posted to qualify the "green" rating. Granted, many people prefer being able to "rate anonymously." I'm just one who prefers to get some idea of WHY a particular site is rated a specific way. For this reason, I also use a few other methods of checking-out a website URL and/or its IP address before deciding if I feel it safe to visit...or not. (Sort of like the old adage...about 'not putting all my eggs in one basket'). Just my two-cents, for what it's worth.
I Use it.....IMO One cannot lose from having access to opinions from differing sources.. My DNS Server has an opinion,as do my Search Engine, and my TrafficLight & WOT exts.... I can very easily ignore their opinions if/when I choose to... It is fair to say that WOTs opinion has been...shall we say "Distorted by a misguided minority of users" regarding some sites....but that (IMO) wasn't reason enough for me to remove it. I would rather be given an opinion that I choose to ignore .... than deny the source of that opinion a voice to begin with.
Changed my vote today. I am done with them. This post says it all .... https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...-been-sold-already.389647/page-4#post-2639791
If your security is sound, there isn't really any need to have such an extension. Even without my dedicated security, Chrome and uBlock have warned me several times of suspicious websites before accessing them. If you have used it for a long time, you might miss it for a while, but I think by and large the potential dangers of browsing are grossly exaggerated. Fear, uncertainty, and doubt on the internet are the factors that keep alive the security industry...
I agree completely. The only times I've got infected just from visiting websites, are when I've been using a computer without the latest Windows, Java and Flash updates. When I've visited even unsafe website on updated computers I've never got infected, unless I've actually manually downloaded and installed something malicious.
Yeah, it was more of a security blanket than anything else. There's nothing like a bit of FUD to promote security software lol.
was it not that long ago that this extension was given nothing but the utmost praise and indeed it raises a question about the legitimacy of all website checkers.
* No I don't AFAIK it's a crowd-source poll. I have sufficient security to duck out, and besides, I got ambushed by rogue advertising on a Major Geeks page.
I used to but no longer for a couple of years I think as I am mostly browsing on my phone or reading feeds on Feedly. Back then, I used it only to see what others comment regarding sites I am new to. I did not really care about the reputation or whatever rating they gave...
I do on my desktop and laptop now that it is once again an add-on for Firefox. Does it make me safer, I don't really know but it at least makes me feel safer and that is what matters to me. John
I just got a popup a few days ago from WOT about a page listed here to a piece of software. On Windows 10 fully patched.
I wish I had checked the web of trust website last month, before I got ripped off by a Chinese run website that ripped me off for $154. There was one user who had reported it as very dodgy. With my comment, now there are two. I did manage to persuade OpenDNS to blacklist them. I didn't check if I could get Google to do similar.
