Worm virus creator to escape with fine, The Austrailian, 7 July 05

"BERLIN: A German teenager who committed one of the most costly acts of sabotage on the internet has confessed everything at the start of his trial and could escape with a fine.

Sven Jaschan, a shy 19-year-old labelled a computer freak by his friends, developed the Sasser and Netsky worms that wreaked havoc around the world in May last year, crippling an estimated 18 million computers. He pleaded guilty to all three charges of sabotage, changing data and interrupting public services.

In theory he faces a jail sentence of up to five years, but he may get away with a fine or community service because he was 17 when he committed the crime.

Jaschan, who is serving an apprenticeship at a software security firm, was living at home in the central German town of Waffensen when he devised the worm that infected computers running on the Microsoft Windows 2000, NT, and XP systems.

The worm drove computer users to despair. Affected computers kept switching off automatically and forwarding the virus via email. Some businesses were forced to close temporarily.

Victims included Delta Airlines in the US, Australian railway controllers, the Westpac bank, the European Commission in Brussels, Goldman Sachs and the British coastguard. Delta Airlines was forced to cancel several flights and Finland's third-largest bank shut its 130 branch offices in a preventive move to keep the worm from infecting its computers."

And why not....he didn't mean to cause all that devastation...MUCH....the little oik should be given twentry years without Parole....the trouble is, we are surrounded by this 'Wishy Washy' Liberal "Oh he didn't mean any harm" tosh.....that these mentally destructive retards get away with their 'Little Joke on Society' instead of having all their assets stripped to pay for the damage they did...and they should never see another Computer in prison, where they belong, for twenty years...........make the sentence Law and you would never see another manufactured Virus thrust upon the Law abiding Comp user ever again.........Deterrents that deter really do work........all it takes is resolve......
