Huawei overtook Apple to become the world’s second best selling smartphone manufacturer in 2019, according to reports from Strategy Analytics, Counterpoint Research, and Canalys.

Over the course of the year, the Chinese manufacturer reportedly shipped around 240 million phones, compared to just under 200 million for Apple. Samsung retained its comfortable lead in first place, shipping just shy of 300 million devices. Xiaomi and Oppo rounded out the list of the top five manufacturers.

Canalys notes that 2019 could have been the year that Huawei challenged Samsung for the number one smartphone spot, but ultimately this challenge never materialized. It’s unclear when the situation could change in the future.
All three market analyst firms agreed that it managed to outsell Samsung in the last quarter, with sales being driven by the iPhone 11’s lower pricing in particular.

Shipments dipped 38 percent year-over-year, from 99.2 million units in February 2019 to just 61.8 million last month.

Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston said supply and demand plunged in China, slumped across Asia and slowed in the rest of the world. According to Strategy Analytics director Linda Sui, some Asian factories were unable to manufacture phones while consumers were unable or unwilling to visit retail stores to buy new devices.
The report echoes what we heard from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) earlier this month. According to that report, smartphone sales in China were down nearly 55 percent in February.

“It is a period the smartphone industry will want to forget,” Mawston added.

Senior analyst Yiwen Wu noted that despite signs of recovery in China, they expect global smartphone shipments to remain weak throughout March 2020. With the coronavirus having locked down hundreds of millions of affluent consumers, the industry will have to work harder than ever to lift sales in the coming weeks, Wu said.
Online flash sales or discounts when bundling with other accessories like smartwatches could be one answer, the analyst added.

Despite bans in the US and its own dire predictions, Huawei shipped more smartphones last quarter than any other company, according to research firm Canalys.
The Chinese company took over from previous world leader Samsung, as Huawei’s sales declined by by only five percent to 55.8 million units, compared to a 30 percent drop for Samsung to 53.7 million smartphones shipped.

“Amidst a period of unprecedented global economic slowdown and challenges, we’ve continued to grow and further our leadership position by providing innovative products and experience to consumers,” Huawei said in an statement to Engadget. “Our business has demonstrated exceptional resilience in these difficult times.”

Canalys: Canalys: Huawei trumps Samsung for first time in worldwide smartphone market in Q2 2020

It marks the first quarter in nine years that a company other than Samsung or Apple has led the market. Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices, down 5% year on year. But second-placed Samsung shipped 53.7 million smartphones, a 30% fall against Q2 2019.

The big picture: Samsung regained the crown as the world's largest phone maker by volume, while Xiaomi was able to climb back to the number three spot by overtaking Apple. Overall, the smartphone market is showing some signs of recovery, but it's still smaller than it was a year ago.

Earlier in 2020, Huawei overtook Samsung for the first time in terms of worldwide smartphone shipments, managing to sell 55.8 million devices despite its products being subject to US sanctions. However, the pandemic-induced trend of slowing smartphone sales has continued through the third quarter, and the top five companies once again shuffled places on the leaderboards.

Counterpoint researchers report that an estimated 366 million units were sold worldwide in Q3 2020, while Canalys has a more conservative estimate of 348 million units. Either way, both agree that Samsung is the leader in terms of shipments with almost 80 million units, which is a small increase year-over-year but also an impressive 47 percent quarter-over-quarter growth story.

Xiaomi has hit a huge milestone in the firm’s quest to top the global smartphone rankings after surpassing Samsung and Apple in June 2021 sales.

Now this alone isn’t necessarily a big deal but having just overtaken Apple as the world’s second-biggest smartphone OEM, Xiaomi is on a roll it seems. A new report from Counterpoint Research suggests that in June 2021, Xiaomi outsold Samsung and Apple for the very first time.
With a 26% month-over-month increase in device sales, the Chinese OEM saw its fastest growth ever.

That said, Xiaomi could continue to climb the smartphone sales rankings if the Vietnam production situation does not improve for Samsung. 2021 has proven to be a huge year for Xiaomi, with a number of firsts and major gains in markets where Huawei has dropped off with sanctions seriously biting over the prior 24 months.
