Baidu takes second place from Google in the smart speaker market

Google is no longer the world's second-biggest smart speaker maker. According to a new report published by market research firm Canalys, China's Baidu now holds that title.
The feat is particularly impressive given that Baidu was effectively a non-entity in the space a year ago with shipments of only 0.1 million units.

An abysmal performance by Google further helped Baidu. The company shipped 4.3 million Home and Nest-branded devices in Q2 2019, down from 5.4 million during the same period last year. The drop in shipments represents a 19.8 percent year on year decline for Google.
Notably, of the five main companies included in today's report, only Google shipped fewer speakers than it did last year.

For what it's worth, it appears Google is aware of its recent missteps and that the company is working to correct course. A recent Nest Mini leak suggests Google is both updating its smallest smart speaker to make it competitive with the third-generation Echo Dot and rebranding the device to add it to its Nest lineup.

The global smart speaker market is on the upswing, according to Canalys, which today released shipment estimates for the most recent fiscal quarter. The firm reports the segment grew 44% to reach 28.6 million units in Q3 2019, coinciding with substantial growth in the smart display category.

Amazon shipped 10.4 million smart speakers in Q3 2019 for a 36.6% share of the market this quarter, up from 6.3 million units in Q3 2018 (a 31.9% share). That put it well ahead of rival Google, which managed to get 3.5 million devices out the door this quarter (for a 12.3% share) versus 5.9 million units in Q3 2018 (29.8%).

As for Baidu and Alibaba, the latter notched 3.9 million units shipped in Q3 2019 (for a 13.6% share of the smart speaker market), up from 2.2 million in Q3 2018 (11.1%), while Baidu sold through to consumers 3.7 million units in Q3 2019 (for a 13.1% share), up from 1 million units in Q3 2018 (4.9%).

In 2019, both Amazon and Google ceded smart speaker market share to Chinese rivals, according to a survey published today by Strategy Analytics.

The firm reports that of the 146.9 million units sold in the year 2019 — a 70% uptick compared with 2018 — Amazon Alexa-powered speakers made up 26.2% (roughly 38.5 million units), a dip from 33.7% (49.5 million) in 2018. For their part, Google Assistant smart speakers nabbed a 20.3% share (29.8 million), down from 25.9% (38 million) the year prior.
On the other hand, Baidu, Alibaba, and Xiaomi all increased their share of the smart speaker market in 2019, while Apple retained its sixth-place position with 4.7% (6.9 million).

Google shipped 13.9 million (up 20% year-over-year), while Baidu shipped 5.9 million (up 171%); Alibaba shipped 5.5 million (up 94%); Xiaomi shipped 4.7 million (up 167%); and Apple shipped 2.6 million (up 65%).
