"40 companies take part in virtual IT job fair for women in DC area

More than 40 companies with D.C.-area IT jobs to fill will take part in a virtual job fair on Thursday — specifically to connect women technology professionals with roles in STEM-based fields in the D.C. metro area.

The job fair is being hosted by trade association Women in Technology and will feature companies including Amazon, Capital One, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Accenture and Geico...

Women in Technology said women make up 47% of the total U.S. workforce, but they hold only 26% of computing-related jobs..."

There are many other factors that need to be taken into account for this kind of statistics to have any kind of value - regardless of what buzzwords people want to use. Age, experience, type of jobs, location, etc. For example, if the survey showed that an average engineer in a specific role with a specific tenure/experience of biological persuasion X makes more than such an engineer of biological persuasion Y, both living and working in the same location, then perhaps there could be value to this. Otherwise, this is "statistics" for average people, which means populism and not science.

You don't need any modern buzzword to make fancy claims. You could say IT engineers make more than DC technicians! Software engineers make more than sysads. Night shift workers make more than dayshift workers in the NOC. Project managers get a different pay from validation engineers. DB folks and security folks aren't paid the same. And this is without going into biology.

But what do I know. I'm just a lowly, lowly cook.

"Twin sisters in Japan have become multi-millionaires after floating their female-focused mobile games company on the stock market.

Anna and Mizuki Nakajima's combined stake in Coly, the firm they founded, was worth around 15.2bn yen (£101m, $141.5m) when it launched last week.

The firm makes anime-based games aimed at women and almost three-quarters of its 200 employees are female...

With fewer than 5% of software companies in Japan led by women, the industry is a "boy's club" and the Nakajimas' story is very unusual..."

"Jen Easterly confirmed as CISA director...

The Senate on Monday confirmed President Joe Biden’s pick to lead the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, filling a critical vacancy as the country reels from a series of digital assaults and a cascading ransomware crisis...

Easterly, who most recently oversaw Morgan Stanley’s resilience strategy, served as the NSA’s deputy director for counterterrorism from 2011 to 2013. One of the architects of U.S. Cyber Command, she had been a frontrunner to be the first ever National Cyber Director, but the president instead nominated former NSA deputy director Chris Inglis to fill the newly-established role..."

"Activision Blizzard employees to walk out in support of harassment lawsuit

More than 2,600 current and former employees signed an open letter to leadership

Activision Blizzard employees will stop work on Wednesday in protest of an 'abhorrent and insulting' response from company leadership to a lawsuit that exposed serious allegations of sexism and harassment at the game publisher.

The lawsuit, filed July 22 by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), described a company culture that allowed for gender-based discrimination and 'constant sexual harassment.'

A two-year investigation into the company alleged that women were held back from promotions for various reasons, including the possibility that they may eventually take maternity leave, and that female employees were subject to 'derogatory comments about rape'and other demeaning behaviors..."

"UK Spies Fund New Course for Female Coders

The UK’s main intelligence agency for dealing with cyber-threats is hoping to attract more female coders to its ranks with a new bootcamp course.

GCHQ is sponsoring one of the 14-week 'nanodegree' courses run by social enterprise Code First Girls, designed to appeal to women who may be considering a career change.

Jo Cavan, the director of strategy policy and engagement at the security agency, told The Guardian that teams such as those in counter-terrorism have seen performance improve since becoming more diverse..."

"Elon Musk says he’s found a woman to lead Twitter as new CEO

Elon Musk said Thursday he has found a new CEO for Twitter, or X Corp. as it’s now called — and it’s a woman. He did not name her but said she will be starting in about six weeks.

Musk, who bought Twitter last fall and has been running it since, has long insisted he is not the company’s permanent CEO. The Tesla billionaire said in a tweet Thursday that his role will transition to being Twitter’s executive chairman and chief technology officer..."
