The story we’re used to hearing is that women get paid less than men.

In Google’s case, according to its own internal pay audit, it turned out male-identified Level 4 Software Engineers received less money than women in that same role.
[...] Google does cite the underpaying of men as a reason why the company paid more in adjustments for 2018 than in 2017. But The New York Times reports men received a disproportionately higher percentage of the money.

"Eastern Europe consistently produces remarkable women in tech or cybersecurity," says Jane Frankland, managing director at Cyber Security Capital in the UK and author of the book InSecurity.
She believes there are several reasons for that: girls are expected to take up computer science from an early age and perform well, and there's no stigma associated with studying technology.

But there's something more: "Culturally, women in Eastern Europe are characterized as having a forthright nature and this means they're more inclined to speak up for themselves, and be hardy to rejection, which is typically needed in a male-dominated environment," Frankland says.

This year’s International Women’s Day 2019 theme of #BalanceforBetter is a positive call-to-action to drive gender balance across the world. This year’s campaign states that “the race is on” for a gender-balanced boardroom and gender balance amongst employees.
How bad is the skills gap? Why does it matter?
Balance is not a women’s issue; it’s a business issue, and it’s nothing new. In recent years, gender parity has been identified as critical to reducing the skills shortage within STEM and the cybersecurity industry specifically.

According to Frost & Sullivan, women make up only 11% of the cybersecurity workforce, and Forrester predicts that in 2019 20% of Fortune 500 CISOs will be women.
So how do we encourage more women into cybersecurity and into senior positions?

Over a third, 33%, of tech workers questioned in the train and coach app's survey said that male attitudes were a barrier, with 39% female tech workers and 33% of their male counterparts in agreement.
The percentage was higher for parents of children under one, with 44% also citing male attitudes having a negative effect.

"With the added pressure of childcare, parents are more likely to suffer from a work-life imbalance, while recent female graduates are encountering more barriers to career progression than their male peers.
"The industry has taken strides over the past year but there is so much more to do to help women succeed in tech," added Gilmartin.

Nearly half of women in the technology sector say their firms are not making diversity a priority, according to research.
While 52% of women in tech said firms are making gender diversity a priority, many also said more needs to be done both to nurture women once they start a technology career and to encourage others into a tech career.

“Driving greater gender diversity in tech is as much about unearthing untapped talent as it is about supporting women who have already built the skills, knowledge and expertise in our sector,” she said. “Diversifying talent – with all aspects of experience, backgrounds and career paths – needs to be front of mind.”

And yet women are still often overlooked in a tech industry where the most well-known figures are male, women tech leaders said Friday.

HackerRank report shows Gen-Z women are ready for the tech workplace

HackerRank today published its 2019 Women In Tech Report, which looks at developer trends across a sample of 12,000 female developers. The report paints an encouraging picture. It highlights that women developers belonging to the so-called Generation Z group possess the skills employers desperately require.

The report defines Generation Z as anyone under the age of 21.
According to the report, more Generation Z women know Java than their male counterparts, while slightly more men claimed proficiency in Python.
HackerRank also looked at hiring trends and employment preferences.

Without a doubt, it’s an encouraging piece of reading. It shows that women are ready for the tech workforce. Tech is a meritocracy, and in a meritocracy, skills are everything. This report proves that women are just as capable of competing with their male counterparts.

Despite some progress, women still only make up 24% of the cybersecurity workforce, according to the 2019 Women in Cybersecurity report from (ISC)².
While this number represents an increase over years past, challenges including wage inequality remain a barrier to drawing more women into the field and filling talent gaps, the report found.

However, this is likely to change in the coming years, as the newest generation of cybersecurity professionals is far more female, according to the report: 45% of the women surveyed were millennials, compared to 33% of men—far higher numbers than expected from this generation in recent years. The report surveyed 1,452 cybersecurity professionals total.
Challenges remain
Despite more women entering and succeeding in the cybersecurity field, pay inequalities persist, the report found. While 29% of men in the field report annual salaries between $50,000-$90,000, only 17% of women do the same. Some 20% of men in cyber earn between $100,000-$499,999, compared to 15% of women.

Fatemah Alharbi breaks things in order to learn how to fix them. Not just any old things. Computer operating systems, to be exact, and she conducted research that earned public gratitude from Apple.

Support from other women in STEM has been important to Alharbi, from her undergraduate professor to her graduate studies at UC Riverside. Last year, she received a scholarship to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration, the world's largest gathering of women technologists.
“The number of attendees was more than 20,000 women and it was one of the best experiences in my life,” she said. “I enjoyed every single moment there.”

“There is this tremendous effort to empower women in computing in Saudi Arabia. I think they are trying to encourage women to have leadership roles,” she said.

Amazon Web Services has revealed an initiative designed to encourage more girls into the technology industry.
‘AWS Get IT’, which was introduced during the cloud giant's London Summit on Wednesday, is a programme to attract 12-13-year-olds, specifically female students, to consider careers in cloud computing and digital roles.

The Get IT programme is explained as a sort of digital skills boot camp, where students can learn about the different stages of developing software, such as how to identify a target audience for their application. Each attendee will learn about problem-solving, brainstorming, research techniques, prototyping and test and development methods.

“No wonder activists are skeptical about real progress in Silicon Valley,” said Deborah Singer, chief marketing officer at Girls Who Code, a nonprofit trying to alleviate the gender gap in tech.
She added, “What’s so deeply ironic about this Photoshop scandal is that in the time it took them to Photoshop Lynn and Ruzwana into the photo, we could have recommended 100 women for them to actually invite and include.”

Chief among the excuses made by tech companies is that there are not enough women or people of color with appropriate education and experience.

The gender gap in computer science research won’t reach equality for more than a century, according to new research released Friday that showed computer science isn’t just lagging behind, it’s also going in the wrong direction.

An analysis of 2.87 million computer science research papers between 1970 and 2018 shows that 'under our most optimistic projection models, gender parity is forecast to be reached by 2100, and significantly later under more realistic assumptions,' researchers wrote. 'In contrast, parity is projected to be reached within two to three decades in the biomedical literature. Finally, our analysis of collaboration trends in Computer Science reveals decreasing rates of collaboration between authors of different genders.'..."
