I think once people realise Google Chrome is the new 'Ask Toolbar' and start asking how to get the thing off their PCs, trends will change, again :D

Is this still going on? :D I saw one thing that caught my interest, "Questioning statistics is silly". I question everything, and no graph showing pretty little lines or any other "irrefutable proof" will ever go unquestioned. I think we forget that users have the power here. They decide what browser is used and for how long, so there's really no point in continuing to argue over what may or may not be. Chrome can just as easily disappear as quickly as it showed up, so.

@Hiemdell: It pretty much is, lol, right down to sticking folders on your system even after you say no.

MS wants Bing to be a viable alternative to Google.
My guess is that we haven't heard anything from Mozilla about renewing with Google because MS is offering Mozilla as much (or more) to make Bing the new default search engine in Firefox.
Mozilla is probably trying to orchestrate a bidding war between Google and MS, and Google isn't that motivated to participate.
I think we'll probably see a deal announced with Mozilla and MS. :shifty:

IMO, all it will take for Firefox to regain its marketshare is ONE really good version. Chrome's market share shot up in no small part due to the herd mentality (at least where I live, it's like "hey, my friend says Chrome is cool! It must be! let's try it! Oh yeah it's cool!" That's how Chrome gained traction here).

The same goes for any other browser. ONE good version is all it takes ;)

IMHO Fx 4 was that. Small bugs aside, Firefox is not only getting better with each consecutive release, but it is far superior to the Fx #3/3.6 series. For the first time in quite a while Firefox is now my default browser.

I think that there is a lot of truth in this. It would be interesting to know the statistics about how many people have tried Chrome & then changed (back?) to something else. There are things I like about Chrome (or Iron), but it's the overall customisability of Firefox that I really missed (plus it doesn't break so many pages for me as Chrome).

This is a very plausible scenario.

Probably, but considering that: There is no real book entitled The Book of Mozilla ~ op cit, I don't really know. Maybe MS will overlook references to IE.

I love its security model, but that's about all it offers me. This supposed "speed" means nothing to me, as Firefox loads up the pages just as quick (without having to resort to the BS of keeping my history and other crap that really is the only reason Chrome is "faster"). On heavy Javascript pages, they both choke to death, so browser doesn't matter.

People also forget that there are plenty of Chrome 1,2,3 and all those early version users out there that are counted in the market share. That's business, but if you think like me, that's skewering the popularity contest a bit.

Chrome has its good points, but as you said a while back: "where's the meat?"

I think there has been quite a bit of skewering with these 'statistics'. ;)

I still bet good money that these Firefox is toast/Firefox isn't quite toast yet threads will still be around this time next year. The figures & arguments will all be more or less the same.

If my memory serves me correct, the original codename for Firefox was Phoenix. Which is a mythical bird that is re-born from its own ashes I believe.

Yep, first it was Phoenix, then renamed Firebird, then finally Firefox....

If true, how will Ed Bott manage now? He was all over this issue.

So, looks like a note from the governor came just in the nick of time to give a reprieve to Mozilla on the alleged death row analogy. ;)

I do not think Firefox will just die without Google's help. However, it will definitely be affected. I do think that in the worst case scenario, other contributors will step in, because Firefox is not just a player in the market: Mozilla is now an organization of historical significance (for good or bad).
