The WireGuard team says that the iOS app is still in beta, but it’s stable enough to be on the App Store. After installing the app, you can scan your server’s QR code to add a VPN configuration to the main settings app.

You can then turn on a VPN connection from iOS settings or the WireGuard app. I’m surprised that it works so well. By default, you’ll remain connected to the VPN server until you switch it off. But you also can configure the app to disable the WireGuard connection when you’re browsing on the cellular network

Don’t trust any VPN company that sells you a subscription or lets you access free VPN servers. A VPN company can see all your internet traffic on their own servers, which is a big security risk
If you absolutely need a VPN server because you can’t trust the Wi-Fi network or you’re traveling to a country with censored websites, make sure you trust the server.

WireGuard could be the most promising VPN protocol in years. It lets you establish a connection with a VPN server that is supposed to be faster, more secure and more flexible at the same time. The developers launched a brand new app in the Mac App Store today.

The team behind WireGuard has been working on a macOS implementation for a while. But it wasn’t as straightforward as an app. You could install WireGuard-tools using Homebrew and then establish a connection using a command line in the Terminal.
It’s much easier now, as you just have to download an app in the Mac App Store and add your server profile. The app is a drop-down menu in the menu bar. You can manage your tunnel and activate on-demand connections for some scenarios.

If you absolutely need a VPN server because you can’t trust the Wi-Fi network or you’re traveling to a country with censored websites, make sure you trust the server.

Jason A. Donenfeld (WireGuard author) has worked to support OpenBSD in WireGuard and as such his post on ports@ last year got me interested in WireGuard, since then others have toyed with WireGuard on OpenBSD before and as such I've used Ted's article as a reference. Note however that some of the options mentioned there are no longer valid. Also, I'll be using two OpenBSD peers here.

Conclusion
WireGuard (cl)aims to be easier to setup and faster than OpenVPN and while I haven't been able to verify the latter, the first is certainly true...once you've figured it out. Most documentation out there is for Linux so I had to figure out the wireguard_go service and the tun parameters. But all in all, sure, it's easier.

Especially the client configuration on iOS which I didn't cover here because it's essentially pkg_add libqrencode ; cat client.conf | qrencode -t ansiutf8, scan the code with the WireGuard app and you're good to go. What is particularly neat is that WireGuard on iOS supports Always-on.

WireGuard Will Port To Existing Linux Crypto API In Order To Make It In The Kernel

The WireGuard open-source secure network tunnel won't be mainlined for Linux 5.4 but there finally is an action plan for getting this promising network security tech into the kernel.

WireGuard has been trying for mainline since last year but ultimately keeps getting blocked by its proposed Zinc crypto API that they've been viewing as a next-generation crypto interface over what is currently offered in the kernel with its crypto APIs. But differing views over Zinc and that making the review more difficult is now leading WireGuard to postponing those plans.

WireGuard will now be ported to the existing Linux crypto API and the Zinc effort will be handled separately after the fact. WireGuard lead developer Jason Donenfeld feels there are "serious problems" with the existing crypto API but will now make use of it anyway in order to get WireGuard mainlined. The crypto API deficiencies revolve around its primitives, interfaces, performance, and overall safety.

Google Ejects Open-Source WireGuard From Android Play Store Over Donation Link In App

Apparently Google doesn't appreciate donation links/buttons within programs found on the Google Play Store even when it's one of the main sources of revenue for open-source programs. WireGuard has been reportedly dropped over this according to WireGuard lead developer Jason Donenfeld.

After waiting days for Google to review the latest version of their secure VPN tunnel application, it was approved and then removed and delisted -- including older versions of WireGuard. The reversal comes on the basis of violating their "payments policy". Of course, Google would much prefer payments be routed through them so they can take their cut...
An appeal to the situation was also rejected by Google, Donenfeld has confirmed this morning on their mailing list.

In trying to make it back into Android's Play Store, Jason has dropped the donation link from the Android app version while it's still awaiting review from Google.

Linus Torvalds pulled WireGuard VPN into the 5.6 kernel source tree

Yesterday, Linux creator Linus Torvalds merged David Miller's net-next into his source tree for the Linux 5.6 kernel. This merger added plenty of new network-related drivers and features to the upcoming 5.6 kernel, with No.1 on the list being simply "Add WireGuard."

WireGuard, created by security researcher Jason A. Donenfeld, is smaller and simpler than most other VPN software. The first version of WireGuard contained fewer than 4,000 lines of code—compared with tens of thousands of lines in other VPN software. That doesn't make WireGuard more secure, but it makes it easier to find and fix problems.

WireGuard is what techies call "opinionated." Instead of presenting endless options, it makes some decisions for you. That may make it less flexible—IPsec and the open source OpenVPN software have more features than WireGuard.

WireGuard VPN makes it to 1.0.0—and into the next Linux kernel

We've been anticipating WireGuard's inclusion into the mainline Linux kernel for quite some time—but as of Sunday afternoon, it's official. Linus Torvalds released the Linux 5.6 kernel, which includes (among other things) an in-tree WireGuard. Phoronix has a great short list of the most interesting new features in the 5.6 kernel, as well as a longer "everything list" for those who want to make sure they don't miss anything.
