Greetings, group. I'm trying to purge the maximumsearch.net hijack from a WinXP machine. I'm using IE; no Netscape. I've just finished following steps 1 and 2 of LowWaterMark's instructional post (found at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913 ). This post represents Step 3.

I have run AdAware6 and HijackThis. After Fixing a slew of items that were clearly related to the maximumsearch hijack, I was able to browse to google.com normally. However, after rebooting the machine and running HijackThis again, I found that all of the R0, R1, and O1 items I'd Fixed had returned. I suspect that there is at least one other item on the HijackThis list that needs to be Fixed, and perhaps other steps need to be taken as well.

The most recent HijackThis log file is included below. I'd appreciate any and all guidance in resolving this issue. Thanks very much for being available to assist.

    Hi aaahzzz,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.maximumsearch.net/search.html
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.maximumsearch.net/

Download CWShredder and run. Be sure ALL other windows are closed and use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot in Safe Mode and delete the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system\systeminit.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\sstyle.css

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi Kent,

Thanks very much for the verbose response. I've done as you instructed. After rebooting the computer, all of the search engines are working properly. google, yahoo, msn, altavista. Everything appears to be behaving as it should.

The latest HijackThis.log is pasted below. Please let me know if anything appears out of place.

    If not, thanks again!
    Steve
