Since last night I've been getting strange errors. At first Windows XP Pro wouldn't even start up until i chose to restart using last known working configuration. Then, when it did start up, It was running in 4 bit color and 800x600 resolution and couldn't be changed from those settings. Also, when right clicking on My Computer and clicking on properties, I got a Winsta.dll error that looks like: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v411/Tjen/winprob2.jpg So a search for Winsta.dll lead me to this formum, to this Thread: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=13309 I figured it might be a virus so I tried to run a scan with Symatec but everytime I hit scan, I get this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v411/Tjen/winprob3.jpg I uninstalled my video drivers and went to install the newest ones and got this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v411/Tjen/winprob1.jpg After reading the bit about being infected with a backdoor on the previously mentioned thread, I assume that's what's happening but I'm still not sure... Any help as to what to do next would be helpful. I think I'm about ready to back up my good stuff and re-format. Also, every now and then I get a message popping up syaing My system is screwed and I am directed to this site: http://www.repairsupport.com/ to fix my problems. I don't fully trust it though.
Don't click ok to that popup, but i guess you already know that . Did you try this: from Tony Klein's post? You can download winsta.dll here:http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?winsta You could try running the System File Checker: After this try some the free online scanners in my signature, and/or scan with Norton in safemode: Hope this helps.
About that popup, have a look here: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/ FYI, disabling the Messenger service is in reality only a workaround. The true reason you're getting these popups is that you're probably not running a (well configured) firewall. I suggest you get one. Cheers,
