Thanks very much for the explanation. I'm looking for a more proactive app, (perhaps AppGuard, Mamutu, or the like).

    Cruise.

    Thank you, Corrine
i dl'ed it again and compared it - the newer ist located here
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software]
    the old one here
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software]

ofc WP can not find it ;)

although i consider this path as not practical
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BillP Studios\WinPatrol]

there are some other settings stored same path, usefull would be
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BillP Studios\WinPatrol\translation]

    HTH

The GUI is still rather buggy.

If you list the issues you see then they can be forwarded to the author

I still cannot disable the auto-start option for Winpatrol. I uncheck the box and then it automatically re-enables. Perhaps you could pass that along to the author?

Which version of WinPatrol do you have installed?

    v24.0.2012.0:24.0.2012.0

    v24.0.2012.1:24.0.2012.1

I'm curious as to why you don't want WinPatrol at start-up.

I'm using v24.0.2012.1:24.0.2012.1. Regarding auto-starting I treat WP as more of an information gathering tool. I don't use it for real time monitoring. This is the first time I've seen this bug where I can't turn it off.

I am running WP 24.0.2012.1 and I am able to turn WinPatrol at startup off. Try clicking on it more than once. I confirmed at reboot it is not running.

    Thanks Corrine.

Could I also ask if you would look at these improvements...

    1. WP provides the details and configuration of installed Drivers.

    2. WP provides the details and configuration of Shell Extensions.

    3. When WP pops up the alert box, the choice is Yes or No. It would be great to have a tick box saying remember the choice. WP would store the information as a Yes, No or Ask and allows the user to edit this.

    4. WP shows Running Programs, with the option to terminate them or delete them.

    5. The tabs. There are a lot and can be somewhat confusing. Could it not be orientated so that the titles i.e Startup Programs, Delayed Start, IE Helpers etc appear as a list of the left and as you click each one, that it displays the contents in a pane on the right. Much easier to navigate.

That's about it thanks. WP is a great app, but the above could help make it even better.

I've installed the new version (24.0.2012.1) posted at WinPatrol.com on 3 machines (1 XP and 2 Win 7 pc's) and all 3 needed the auto start with Windows to be hand checked (default was UNchecked.) If Bill fixed it, it doesn't fix it for all users... :(

i am currently using SSM free.

can Winpatrol be considered as HIPS?
can it be used to block exe file?

It polls for changes, doesn't block. It will tell you what change has happened and then you can decide if you want to keep that change. Bare in mind that the change has already happened, it is simply telling you about it. It will not intercept a change and halt it while you decide to let it happen or not. It is excellent as a system monitor, but not for system control.

The above is my opinion only. I love it, but I have Comodo D+ for control so I'm happy that WP is a system monitor and a comfortable extra layer.

Winpatrol is HIDS not HIPS app.
Differences between HIDS ("D" means Detection) and HIPS well explained muf in post above.

Less I guess the best what you can do is to send minidump file on Winpatrol email support.

I have a weird problem where Win Patrol doesn't show a tray icon when booting into windows every time. Anyone else encountered this using a Windows 7 64 bit OS?

Is "Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts" checked?

The new version upgrade seemed to have unchecked it (at least for my case, using Windows 7 64bit here).

Same here, I had to re-check the startup option. Didn't verify it does work though.
