Then it would be some other process or service. Windows update is just the most common culprit. The last time I dealt with this it was a font presentation service that came with Adobe software. This was in 7, not Xp.

My CPU is only at 4% while I type this and the system is fast and responsive. My ram, on the other hand is at 67% of 3gb. That is the limitation of Xp and all 32 bit OSes right there. Not enough ram. That will also slow Xp to a crawl because it be constantly swapping to the pagefile. Xp is pretty limited by today's standards but if you use it within its limits, it still performs quite well.

The corollary to the Xp article is this:

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/windows-7-now-growing-faster-than-windows-10-511460.shtml

It looks like the huge user base of Xp users is starting to move on and Windows 7 is their Windows of choice.

Wow, pretty impressive that people are still even discussing XP never mind their market share in 2017.

Maybe helped a bit by the unofficial SP4 release ?

    Regards Eck:)

    reason of XP survival :

    - "Poor" countries & low end hardware : no choice for them, the hardware can't run better than XP
    - Stupid and stingy businesses : yes that exist, "why upgrade the hardware if they sill run properly." Best examples are ATMs or employee workstations.
    - Everlasting fans: can't do much against that, you can tell them win10 is safer, they will answer "i just like XP design"...
    - Power users : same as above, "my tweaked XP is so light on my i7 octo-core , 32gb RAM" ; don't even mention about security , they won't care, they have an HIPS or backup for that...

That registry tweak can be done manually in a few seconds. I downloaded the patch but reading the description just got me to launch regedit and do it myself. Most patches involve actual replacement of code, not an automated registry tweak.

The reason for Xp's survival might be that Microsoft has gone in a direction that a lot of users didn't like. If I start playing around with a Mac running OSX Tiger and then switch to a new one running El Capitan, I don't find all that much different. The user interface is consistent and the major parts of it work the same in versions of the OS that are 15 years apart. The same can't be said of Windows. Each new version of Windows is a GUI fashion statement that forces users to relearn what was familiar to them in the previous version. There is always new and different bloat and less and less end user control. Microsoft could learn from Apple's example and keep the GUI the same, or at least offer the old GUI as an optional skin and just focus on updating the back end code.

Most businesses are pragmatic, not cheap. Relicensing software at several hundred dollars a seat every few years is not an expense that most businesses can take on lightly, especially if what they already have works for them with no problem. Government budget cycles are often 10 years in the US. That means many state, federal and local governments run outdated systems. The regulations that mandate this are set up to avoid wasting taxpayer money.

Xp survives for a variety of reasons but the major one is dissatisfaction with what Microsoft has produced since. The only Windows since Xp that received a mostly favorable reception was Windows 7.

Well, I've been dubious about installing the first patch. Has anyone else at Wilders used that patch for XP and if so how did it go? If what these guys say on ghacks is anything to go by then I'm NOT keen to go ahead. :cautious: Instead I've blocked ports and stopped File and Printer sharing for MS networks.

I just read the article and comments, and I couldn't see any mention of problems arising from installing the patch.

Have a look at post 24

    EDIT:
@stapp Thanks. Apologies as you'd already mentioned you've applied the patch on the " My old XP box is close to death;..." thread.

I do agree regarding the GUI. If having a familiar look would make the transition easier for some people, then I think it's good to offer the older look as a built-in option.

I understand licensing costs point of view but to be fair, they have had more than 10 years to prepare the budget. Microsoft ended XP support only after 12 years on April 8, 2014 which meant they already had a grace period of 2 additional years by then.

We are past 3 years from that date now so there should be very little excuse for running outdated systems like XP.

roger, my browser shows post numbers or at least I suppose thats what they are.. Not sure why you can't see the numbers, but have a look near the bottom of the comments, which my excerpt is pasted from.

I just read the comments, you are referring too. I don't know why, but neither my Chrome based browser or Edge show the numbers.

roger I don't see the post numbers either.

Perhaps it's an ad blocker thing, I don't know.

That's what I suspected too. But, I still don't the numbers when disabling uBlock, or using a browser with no adblocker installed.

Absolutely! The bold text above indicates near perfectly why I have not upgraded any MS os recently.
