    Hello:

Today, I formatted my hard drive and re-installed Windows XP Home Edition. The reason why I re-installed Windows XP Home Edition is because my previous operating system was badly infected by viruses. Now I finished re-installing my operating system; however, I'm now having difficulty changing my screen resolution. Also, the computer does not detect a audio device (which was not a problem from my previous operating system). And, when I installed Verizon DSL software the software says that it does not detect a modem (which I also previously had no problem from a previous operating system). Any help is welcomed?

    Thank you.

I don't know if there is a relationship, but did you upgrade to SP3 and then reformat?

Yes I did. My prior Windows XP Home Edition was upgraded to SP3 before I formatted my hard drive.

When I periodically reinstall Win XP Home on my machine,
in addition to the MS Windows CD, afterward I have to
    insert 3 more CDs to:

    1. Load Motherboard Drivers

    2. Load audio drivers

    3. Load modem drivers

Then go to the card manufacturers website, and load video card drivers.

After all that, I return to Windows Update to install SP3.

I suppose it depends on what your computer maker provides for a
    recovery method.

Do you think that perhaps the SP2 originally installed doesn't entirely cooperate with SP3 during a reformat? Maybe some more learned members would have the answer.

When I formatted my hard drive I didn't have that problem. I guess maybe because I had the computer boot directly from my Windows XP Home Edition installation CD.

I have never owned a Dell, so I have no idea what hardware cards
they use or how the machine is configured. If a friend asked me to
help solve the problem, I would call Dell support. Bet they can
give you the answers in short order.

Actually, I was able to solve the problem last night. I needed to download a few DELL drivers from the DELL website. Thank you so much for everyone's help.
