    Hi all,

Never had any kind of problem with Windows Update until this week.

Bunch of new security patches are appearing. According to Update they were all published 08/05/12.

8 of them fail to update and generate 'Unknown Error' code ref. Which is helpful.

I've had no conflicts with the Update service to date and am only running WSA AV real-time.

Anyone else had any kind of bother?

    Cheers.

Pick one and download manually. Try to install and see what happens

    Cheers for the reply.

You mean download individually from Windows Update? Tried this and each one fails.

Or try to download directly from Microsoft site using Update reference KB12345etc.?

So this looks like it's going to be a royal pain in the arse :p

Going to have a go from the Microsoft website. Had a look and seems awfully convoluted.

Cheers for your suggestion. Appreciate it.

Manually downloaded each update and they wouldn't install.

Tried installing the updates in safe mode. They wouldn't install.

Tried deactivating WSA. They wouldn't install.

Either just going to ignore the updates or re-install windows.

    Piece of crap machine.

    On it...

    Cheers.

Method 1 came to nothing. Trying the manual download now. Worth a punt.

Downloaded the tool and ran it.

Hangs on 'Installing Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)'.

    Won't even cancel.

Going to tackle it after some sleep. o_O

    Cheers for your suggestion.

It is not recommended using the Download Centre in lieu of Windows Update. You may run this tool that resets all Windows Update components on your computer.
Microsoft has an around the clock service dedicated to issues such as these, you may reach them 1-866-727-2338 | US & Canada only.

    Thanks.

Tried this early on in my quest :) Just ran it again and same thing-the updates won't install.

Cheers for the contact info. Live in the UK so will have to sort something out.

    Hi there,
I've had similar problems back in 2010, see my post then:

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=270441

If you are in a hurry you can try this fix:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939615

In my case there was a strange correlation between 'System restore', 'Windows own defragmenter' and 'updates'. If Windows Updates would fail it meant that even System Restore was broken, and Windows own defragmenter wouldn't operate either.

Nowadays I think I found out the culprit on my Vista system, Shadow Defender, somehow it creates the problem after a while it is installed. It never happens on my XP machines. Good luck.

Another option as I was not aware you are in the UK is: Microsoft Answers
This is web-based, 24 | 7 and free of charge.

    So I reinstalled Windows :p

I know, I know :) I wussed out. There's not much running on my machine so luckily it didn't take too long to get back up to date.

I was running Office 2003 on Vista and have omitted it from the fresh install. No problems yet and everything seems up to date.

    Bizarre.

    Thanks to all who posted.

    Hello all,

Having the same problem as crapbag. Basically, Windows update (Vista) will not work. Neither will the print spooler but first things first. Looking for solutions on the net and came across this site.

Read Rico's post and hoped for a eureka moment but....no joy. Have done some common fixes: Fixit, sfc/scannow, regedit, chkdskC:/f. Still looking.
