Is it true that you now have to validate windows before you can get secuirty updates?

From what it seems on Microsoft.com, you ARE required to validate before you can download anything.

I went to microsoft updates today and even though my copy of xp has already been validated I still had to install the new validation software and revalidate before I could even see if any updates were available.

I understand the reasoning behind the validation rule, but it gets old when you have to valadate more than once :doubt:

    Same thing here...

It will be interesting to see if the validation process is automatic in the future or not (ie, when using automatic updates or notifications). I guess we will have to wait until the next updates come out to see...

after installing the validation software a little earlier today, I just now went back and tried again and it flew right through to the updates. At least that is a good sign. ;)

For anyone who hasn't gone thru this new validation thing yet, it's surprisingly quick and easy. Unlike "activation", there's no need to plug in those miserably long product-key strings, it reads what it needs right off your system and all you have to do is hit "Continue" a few times.
