Windows Terminal gets support for creating custom themes

Microsoft released a new Windows Terminal version today that adds a long-awaited feature, making it possible to create and use custom themes.

After adding a new theme config to the JSON file, it will automatically appear in the app's Settings > Appearance settings page.

"themes is a global property that can contain a variety of themes objects, which will appear in the Theme dropdown on the Appearance page of the settings UI," Windows Terminal Program Manager Kayla Cinnamon explained.
To add your own custom themes, you will have to install the app's latest version, Windows Terminal Preview 1.16.

The new version also adds updated default colors and sets the dark theme as the default theme instead of following the default Windows system theme.

"We have modified some of the default colors in Windows Terminal for a more cohesive appearance. Additionally, we are defaulting Terminal to use dark theme, rather than following the system theme," Cinnamon added.

Terminal now supports "Mark Mode", a keyboard-first text selection and navigation mode. The name is an homage to the traditional Windows Console Host!

It is bound by default to Ctrl+Shift+M

Note that the new text rendering engine and scrollbar mark feature is not included in this Stable build. Yet.

Microsoft Promotes Its Open-Source Terminal To The Default For Windows 11 CLI Apps

As some interesting open-source news out of Microsoft today, their open-source Windows Terminal that has been in development the past few years and providing many modern features is now the default beginning with Windows 11 22H2.

Assuming you are using Windows and have no other default preference set for the terminal, beginning with the new Windows 11 22H2 the Windows Terminal will assume the default role. Kayla Cinnamon, the Windows Terminal Program Manager at Microsoft, proudly announced today that all command-line applications on Windows 11 (22H2 and later) will now automatically open using the Windows Terminal.

This news shouldn't be too surprising though since last year they expressed plans to make Windows Terminal the default and now with the 22H2 update they did deliver that on time... Now Windows 11 finally has a default terminal comparable to the rather good terminal emulators long available on the various Linux desktops.

The day has finally come! Windows Terminal is now the default command line experience on Windows 11 22H2! This means that all command line applications will now automatically open in Windows Terminal. This blog post will go into how this setting is enabled, the journey of Windows Terminal along with its fan-favorite features, as well as give a huge thank you to our contributors who have helped throughout Terminal’s journey.

Windows Terminal v1.15.2874 and v1.15.2875 Released (October 18, 2022)

v1.15.2784 (Windows 10) and v1.15.2785 (Windows 11) are servicing updates to Windows Terminal Stable v1.15. It is highly recommended that you install this version if you're using Windows 11 22H2 (October Update).

As a reminder, Terminal 1.12 was the last version of Windows Terminal that supports Windows 19H1 or 19H2.
Those versions of Windows went out of support in May, so you really may want to consider upgrading.
This servicing release supersedes the v1.15.2712.0 release (not uploaded to GitHub) and contains the following bug fixes and changes:

Windows Terminal Preview 1.17 now out with Mica support and process restart

Windows Terminal became the default command line tool in Windows 11 back in October 2022, which means that Microsoft is more focused than ever on making it a suitable CLI for millions of customers.
Now, it has released Windows Terminal Preview 1.17 and updated the stable release to version 1.16 too.

Windows Terminal Preview 1.17 includes support for dropdown customization to add folders, separators, and profiles by editing the settings.json file. Additionally, another feature some might like is the ability to restart a process by pressing Enter after it has terminated. Moreover, launch position parameters in the Startup section of the Settings UI can be configured too.

On the aesthetics side, there is support for Mica as a background material in Windows 11 by setting the useMica property to "true" in the settings.json file.

After a long wait, many of the features in Terminal Preview 1.16 are making their way to the stable channel:

Themes: Terminal now has support for themes!

We have a new experimental text rendering engine, which is off by default. It's faster and handles some situations better (and some much worse, like certain fonts that don't have a true "italic" style). You can enable it in the Rendering settings.

This release marks the triumphant return of the "adjust brightness of indistinguishable colors" feature

For the old conhost fans in the room, you can now set experimental.enableColorSelection (global, bool, default false)
