Kayla Cinnamon, the Program Manager at Microsoft, announced in a cheerful tweet that she and her team published the roadmap for Windows Terminal.
The schedule includes every step until the final push to Windows Terminal 2.0 for general public programmed for 2021-05-31.

Today, Microsoft is releasing Windows Terminal Preview version 1.1, and it contains a whole bunch of new features.

First up, you can now choose to open files with Windows Terminal from the File Explorer. To be clear, it's still going to launch Windows Terminal Preview until Windows Terminal 1.1 is out for everyone. You can also now set Windows Terminal to launch at startup by setting startOnUserLogin to true in global settings. There's also a new fontweight profile setting.
You can also now Alt-click to open panes. This will use the auto-split feature, opening the new pane along the longest axis. These selections can be found in the dropdown next to your tabs.

Microsoft released Windows Terminal in 2019 replacing the default Windows Console that PowerShell and CMD use by default. The new terminal program contains many features that command-line users have been asking for years like tabs, profiles, and modern text rendering. Although the JSON based settings allow users to customize the app, many users have asked for a GUI page (Graphic User Interface) for the settings menu because editing JSON, while flexible, is very hard.

Today, a program manager (Kayla Cinnamon) from Microsoft teased on Twitter that Settings GUI is coming in the next preview version of Windows Terminal. From the GIF, we can see that the Settings page opens in one of the tabs just like how a new terminal tab would.

Windows Terminal 1.13 comes with a new look for settings and auto-elevated profiles

Microsoft has released Windows Terminal 1.13 Preview today, and the latest version is packing some new changes, as per usual. Meanwhile, Windows Terminal 1.12 is now available as a stable release including all the changes that were available in preview. That includes the to restore windows from a previous session, and a new transparency mode for the app.

Focusing on what’s new today, though, Windows Terminal 1.13 brings some notable improvements. For one thing, the settings page has a brand-new look, which is meant to align with the overall look of Windows 11. The new look will feel familiar if you’ve used the Windows 11 Settings app, and it’s a welcome upgrade that makes the app look a bit nicer on Windows 11.

Microsoft has also added a new experimental text rendering engine, which you can enable in Terminal’s settings. While it shouldn’t make a huge difference to most users, Microsoft says you might notice performance improvements when dealing with large amounts of text in lots of different colors.

Finally, it’s now possible to customize the bell sound for a specific profile. In smaller changes, Windows Terminal now also supports Snap Layouts in Windows 11, making window management easier.

Microsoft has released new Windows Terminal updates for both its Stable channel as well as pre-release Preview channel. The latest Stable update is Windows Terminal v1.14.186 and it brings over the fixes from the previous Preview channel release. This means the new Stable update has fixes for several crash issues and more. Microsoft notes here that the text rendering engine is not available in this update.

Windows Terminal is now the default terminal in Windows 11 dev builds

Microsoft has finally made Windows Terminal the default terminal in Windows 11 Insider 'Dev' preview builds, bringing a new modern interface for all your command-line programs.

In both Windows 10 Insider builds and Windows 11, Microsoft has already integrated support for Windows Terminal into the operating system, letting you select it as your default console terminal.
However, Microsoft had previously said they plan to make Windows Terminal the default console for everyone in 2022.

"Over the course of 2022, we are planning to make Windows Terminal the default experience on Windows 11 devices," Windows Terminal Program Manager Kayla Cinnamon said.

Now the default console in Dev preview builds
Today, Microsoft has released Windows 11 'Dev' preview build 25188 and finally brings those plans to fruition, as in this build, Windows Terminal is now the default console when launching a command-line application or PowerShell script.

"Windows Terminal is now the default terminal in Windows 11. This means, all command line applications will open in Windows Terminal automatically (Command Prompt and PowerShell, for example)," Microsoft announced today.

For this change to occur, users must have Windows Terminal 1.15 or later installed, and in our tests, have opened the program at least once. Once set as the default terminal, any console programs will now automatically launch within Windows Terminal.
