Yes, and Configure Defender is set to high for me, not Max.

You should switch off Default Deny Protection only when installing a program, then switch it back to "On" again. Did you confirm what @Bertazzone advised you of above in post #3578? Make sure "ADMIN: HIDE SECURITY CENTRE" is set to "Visible".

Do you have "run as admin" avail?

I just uninstalled KSC to test something and when I try to run Configure Defender I get this:

    Configure_Defender.PNG

Any ideas? I've disabled OSA, BlackFog Privacy and even Hard_Configurator, all with no help.

OT: Web pages open way faster in Firefox without KSC installed.

Thank you @Gandalf_The_Grey ! I sincerely appreciate your help. I have an update though. A clean install of Windows 10 21h2 was a consideration, however I decided on a slightly less painful repair installation. Basically in in-place upgrade using the ISO to 'upgrade' the machine. The result of that was that I can now open Configure Defender. Clearly something was a little messed up with my installation but it appears to be resolved now.

    Thanks again, Mate. :thumb:

    Cheers,
    Dave

Glad I can help and that you got it resolved by a repair installation :thumb:
I will post your update on MT and if I get a response on the original question, I will post it here.

    Thanks again.

It wasn't the only reason I did the repair install. I've had some weird internet issues with this machine for a while now and have been thinking about a clean install. This latest thing almost pushed me to go through with it.

Hopefully the connection bug has been squashed now too.

    Cheers!

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint laid low. Not by malware, but by another buggy Windows patch

For me, Microsoft Defender was laid low by a malware test file, for the second time in a month on Windows 10 Home 21H2. The first time was a crash when testing Microsoft's own AMSI test string in a vbs file. This time, MD could neither quarantine nor delete a test .exe from Github. I'm glad it happened with a non-malicious file and not a real threat. It may be peculiar to my 2016-vintage laptop (Intel 6th gen), but MD seems to be regressing.

Its not regressing, I'm fairly certain you could find 2 exploits for every AV that they could not prevent. Its one of the best free AV's available and one of the best AV's period if you use Configure Defender.

I have been using MS Defender with Configure Defender for about 4 months now after switching from Avast free. Is there any advantage to adding another layer such as Voodoo Shield or would that be redundant? My browser is Firefox with Privacy Badger, UBlock Origin and Decentraleyes and I usually have my DNS set as Quad 9 Security. Occasionally I will use Sandboxie and Shadow Defender as well. Thanks to all the replies.

It depends on your browsing style, habits, etc. I feel comfortable using MSD alone in High, Max or custom settings. While not exactly like OS hardening they do provide a bit of hardening and approximate some VS features. If you want to use it with VS than you may as well use Defender at default settings.

Security forums and similar websites tend to sway users toward paranoia (or interest as a hobby, etc.) and security risks for home users are not like those of more lucrative targets. Of course this assumes one uses common sense when browsing, opening emails, etc.

My view is that all you need is MS Defender (with no additional tweaks) and a daily image backup. All the other add-ons are generally redundant and may impact performance.

Not much point using those two together.
