I use a VPN and there is very little difference in speed whether it is on or off. It's just a matter of finding a VPN which works for you. Some VPNs I've used have been very slow.

While far from essential, it is a good idea to use a third party firewall, as it will alert you when an untrusted program is connecting to the internet. I don't use one myself, as I like to use as little security software as possible,

I use BulletVPN. However, what works best for you will depend on your location.

I installed her kaspersky secure cloud, all the latest ****, 10000000 tools and ****. But they dont get launched unless u choose to. And ofc we uninstalled kaspersky vpn (imagine paying for that when theres Nord vpn etc.). And all those "this site's certificate is expired are u sure bla bla bla" stuff that people describe as bloated, can be turned off from settings, u can only use the bare funtionality if u want to. Ofc, since its my grandma and she doesnt understand ****, I need a program that will do everything by itself (so for example, no stuff like apguard that is static rules and needs frequent configuration and stuff, we need a flexible program that will do everything), and I left most of these on since they can be useful for a user that doesnt know what he's doing. For example the certificate scanning, now I've never once encountered malware using canary/raw custom compiled chromium. And if they did have a zero day, they'd be submitting it in the bug bounty program (150K+ payout for chrome https://www.google.com/about/appsecurity/chrome-rewards/ , https://portswigger.net/daily-swig/pwn2own-2019-hackers-can-now-scoop-80-000-for-chrome-exploits this one is from 2019 old), or selling on the dark web for millions. In the last pwn2own 2019, no1 managed to break chrome. Now if u check the CVEs , https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=google chrome you see very few cves (only 11 since start of year), and they all require you to visit a specific webpage, and not even all of em are exploited in the wild, some are discovered by security researchers. So yeah, I personally find programs defending ur browsers useless, as long as update to newest version. U have a higher chance of being struck by lightning than encountering one as a home user. And yes I use the inbuilt av firewall for her so she wont have to allow/deny

I recommend IVPN as I tried many over the years and never had any issues on any device and IMO it's the best, it's not the cheapest but well worth the money! Now back to Windows Defender! If I didn't have a Lifetime License of Webroot SecureAnywhere I would use Windows Defender with (MBAM Lifetime Windows Only unfortunately) and VoodooShield Pro.

This is a support tool, to reset explorer and the icons visible in Windows system-tray.
Have some time to spend? Try it.;)

    Many thanks for your answer.
Good thing I didn't click it. Both Explorer and system tray are just fine and I don't intend to break it.

OK thanks, now I finally understand what you mean, so it's not a matter of behavior blocking, I will try to exclude the hosts-file from scanning.

The reason why I said that you might want to use a dedicated tool like AppCheck is because of the IObit attack, apparently certain AV's failed to protect against the ransomware.

SmartScreen stays on but I guess that depends on if you consider it to be part of Defender.

SmartScreen, Exploit protection, device protection modules remain enabled, but are part of Windows native protection, which are technically separate from MD AV.

Of note is the third party AV must register itself within Windows Security Center and use an ELAM driver. Otherwise, WD real-time protection will run concurrently with the third party AV real-time protection.

Yes, for example WiseVector StopX does not disable WD as yet.

    One more thing:
Even when another AV disabled WD, you can still activate a periodic scan.

I have often set that to On.
But curiously, at some point it is set Off again.
Not sure what does it - I use EAM (bug?) ... unless a Win update resets it (unlikely)?

Never figured it out - trying again.

With KSCF installed and MD / WD Periodic Scanning enabled it runs a quick scan daily.

I didn't have it enabled while Norton was installed because for some strange reason as soon as MD / WD had finished scanning Norton would run a Full System Scan slowing the machine down for the duration.
