Re: Windows Blue to merge Windows Phone and Windows 8

One of the best journalists/writers when it comes to Microsoft-related news is Ars Technica's Peter Bright IMO.

I really like his articles: http://arstechnica.com/author/peter-bright/

When I want to read a balanced and as correct as possible article regarding some Microsoft move, that's where I usually go.

BTW, see what he has to say about your link's speculation.

Windows Blue & Desktop death nonsense explained

I've just written the most intelligent article of the whole decade. Nerds and geeks worldwide, you will sleep tight after reading this. Here's a super long, detailed article explaining why the claim of imminent desktop death in relation to Windows Blue is utter bollocks, focusing on Windows Blue changes, functionality and technology, conventional input methods of keyboard and mouse, sensitivity and precision of touch, form factor, anatomical and ergononic considerations, historical examples like landline versus mobile phones, tape versus CD player, desktop versus laptop, and electric cars versus internal combustion engine, Firefox market share case study, desktop usage model and advantages, monetary considerations and product life cycle, market analysis, interesting quotes, and more. Enjoy most pleasantly.

Very good, and I couldn't agree more. Any intelligent, and some not so intelligent, person(s) can see the truth and reality here, in spite of all the MS marketing and hype...

Thanks for that link but if you ask me, that really isn't that much "news" in it compared to what most Windows Blue junkies/lookers already know. Wish there was more confirmation on things but I guess they insist on making interested parties "wait and see".

Well, Ms Reller did say "We are being principled, not stubborn". Did we know that before? :D

That's fine, but the next question would be, does installing this "free" 8.1 update then put the user into the subscription model with annual fees?

They aren't announcing/selling/whatever any "subscription model" for Windows, let alone charging annual fees.

Maybe you're confusing such model with Software Assurance/Volume Licensing, that share some similarities.

No, just wondering if they're going to do it yet with Win 8. There was talk about it in various places, and they have already done this with Office 365, so it wouldn't be much of a surprise if they tried to do it with Win soon also. Just curious... Guess we'll see when the release actually occurs and they actually say something real about it, instead of just unofficial speculation and rumors.

That Windows 8.1 ("Blue") will be a free upgrade for Windows 8 owners isn't speculation or rumor - it was confirmed by Microsoft.

Sure, but that still leaves the question of whether it will become subscription based open... it would be totally logical for MS to offer "Blue" for free, get everyone hooked, and then turn around and tell everyone that from that point on, Win will be subscription based. Anything is possible. We just don't know yet.

Are you talking about next commercial releases of Windows?

Such drastic change in the license model is out of question for Windows 8 during its lifecycle, especially for those that already bought it. It would be illegal.

Yeah, I don't know... I just think it's coming, given everything else that's been going on the past year...
